The Biggest Fly Rod Review of 2013

UK anglers seem to love complaining about the reviews in the angling press, about how in depth they go, the ranges on test and of course there's always some sort of crazy conspiracy theory surrounding the winners (and losers)! I think most magazine reviews are OK and can be quite accurate but of course in the shop we get to experience and try out a lot more gear than the average angler, so we can see where some of the the misgivings about them could come from - especially if you are relying on a rod test, review or comparison to help with an expensive tackle purchase!
Spoiler Alert - The new G.Loomis NRX LP came out on top!
I always enjoy reading the in depth reviews from Yellowstone Angler in the states, and this most recent one concentrates on the latest 9ft #5 rods and features 29 current models from all price points including the Hardy Zenith, Sage ONE, G. Loomis NRX Light Presentation, Hardy Artisan, Orvis Helios 2, Sage Circa, Scott G2, Greys GRXi+, Scott A4 and the Greys XF2 - all tested with a level of detail that would be impossible to fit in any angling magazine!

The level of detail these guys go to is outstanding - how do they find the time?
Check it out and let us know what you think! With this level of detail it's important to read the rod reviews as well as look at the winners and losers to find what rods might suit you best -  Click here to read the rod test!

And remember if you would like to cast any of our fly rods before you buy it, you can try out as many as you like on the casting pool at the shop, usually under the watchful eye of a SGAIC Instructor if required.

An artist with a message for us all!

Here is esteemed artist Howard Butterworth in action painting at Borrowston on the River Dee opening ceremony 2013, celebrating the River Dee and the 150th birthday of the Dee District Salmon Fishery Board. Howard is an artist of great renown and sees his paintings fetch top dollar at market. Howard wanted to continue his dedicated efforts as a kind and generous supporter of the River Dee, its education programmes for children, and of course the tremendous amount of habitat restoration work restoring the River Dee valley to its former glories. Over 100 years ago many riparian forests were removed which allowed sheep farmers to prosper and when they moved out, Deer and Forestry became the main resource for many land owners.
Now with global warming affecting the upper Dee valley and harming the progeny of our treasured spring salmon stocks, action is being taken to mitigate against this increasing and maligning threat. The £2.5 million Pearls in Peril project will see a terrific amount of native woods being planted throughout the upper catchment and tributaries which will provide shading to cool the river in summer months, stabilise the banks against erosion preventing siltation, and provide a home for invertebrates which are vitally important to our rare freshwater pearl population and juvenile spring Salmonids. This is a hugely ambitious project, albeit the River Dee organisations have a great track record in project delivery, with the E.U Cass Life project an example of exemplary delivery of a large match funded project. The River Dee Trust need to find funds constantly to allow them to seek matched funding opportunities that arise from time to time and enable great restoration work programmes to be undertaken. Every contribution made to the River Dee Trust is crucial and does get used for very important work projects, the likes of which could never be undertaken in a short time span without this collaborative support.
Never more than now has the Trust need your support, and to this end Howard has created a wonderful painting for supporters of the River Dee and its native wildlife to purchase. For every high quality Giclee print sold by the Butterworth Gallery at Ballogie, Howard will donate £25 to the River Dee Trust. Howard asks supporters of the Dee to embrace this initiative. Will you please consider providing a nice home to a lovely image that celebrates the stewardship of the River for the last 150 years by the River Dee Board? You can go to Howard’s website to order a copy of this fine artwork, and in the process really make a vital gesture of support to our River Dee, here http://www.butterworthpaintings.co.uk/acatalog/River_Dee_Opening_Ceremony_2013.html

The Worlds (second) Biggest Fly Rod!

Could this be the world biggest fly fishing outfit?
Ron Little, an artist from Washington has a passion for vintage fishing tackle and has a collection of antique fishing gear. So when his friend gifted him a ships mast, made from Douglas Fir, and suggested he use it as a flagpole, all he could envision was one gigantic fly rod!
Ron fabricated most of the fittings by hand!
So he started shaping the masts into what would ultimately become what he believed to be the world's largest functioning fly rod and reel. He spent the next 9 months hand crafting the rod and fly reel, fabricating the copper ferrules, the steel snake guides, the stainless steel reel seat, the African Wenge wood reel and genuine cork handle.
The reel is a giant replica of a 19th century English reel
He even machined the brass for the frame of the giant fly reel. All to create a realistic (giant) version of a 19th century English fly rod and reel. The Wenge wood for the reel was used because it closely resembled the black walnut they used for the English reels. The Douglas Fir pole even resembles the green hart wood of the old English made fly rods. The handles for the reel are made of marble which represents the agate handles of the period. The rod and reel have been aged and weathered to emulate the wear that an old rod would have. As time goes on, it will only get better.
It is time for this big fly rod to find a new home!
The finished fly rod is 38ft long and is comes apart just like the real thing into three sections. Ron realised that to scale, there should really be one more section, but he was taking into consideration that this would need to fit inside a structure that would have a moderately large room to display it in. The fly rod and reel was featured in the December 2009 Issue of Fly Fisherman Magazine and has been on display at a local sporting goods store for the public to enjoy. But it now needs a REAL home! If you are the owner or decorator of a hunting/fishing lodge or sporting goods store ( or own a large man-cave and just need a large fly rod) then consider this one-of-a-kind item for your pleasure! You can find it on ebay HERE.

Ron's giant rod and reel unfortunately isn't the biggest in the world, if you want to see that, then check out this one in Houston!
