Trout and Salmon Magazine - 14ft Salmon Rod Review
This month in Trout and Salmon magazine they have one of their big rod reviews, always a source of much discussion between anglers all over the world! This time round it's 14ft(roughly) Salmon fly rods, with the focus mostly on new models for this season! The stand out models tested include...
The new Guideline Exceed - In Jim Curry's review of this rod he loved the responsiveness and versatility and there is definitely a bit of a buzz around these rods instore with the first and second deliveries selling out very quickly! Is this the best value for money rod Guideline have ever made? We think so!
The Greys XF2 'S' - The replacement for the Greys X-Flite is proving very popular and having the choice between the Scandi action and Traditional action is a clincher for a lot of customers. Jim Curry said in his review of the rod how powerful it was and how it would make a great sunk line rod. It's a pity they couldn't also test the XF2 'T' model along side the Scandi model.
The Hardy Marksman 2 'T' - Both rod testers, Jim Curry and Gary Champion, were impressed by these rods, liking the cosmetics and action of the rod and praising its lightness in the hand in their reviews. Again this rod is available in a Scandi version and it would have been nice to have seen them both tested to see what they thought.
The Mackenzie DTX G2 - Scott Mackenzies latest rods have been getting a lot of attention in the shop both from veteran DTX owners and newcomers alike. Gary Champion noted the improvements in his review, pointing out that this rod was slimmer, lighter and faster than previous models tested, virtues that may not suit everybody, but then the older rods are still available to buy and at a better price than ever!
The Hardy Zenith SINTRIX double hander - Both Jim and Gary were very impressed with this rod and gave it a glowing review! The power and performance of these rods did not go unnoticed and neither tester had a bad word to say about it, and this is also what we have found with anyone who test casts these, you just don't want to put it down! The only drawback is the price but these rods are really at the top of their game...
You can read the full review HERE and every rod is available to see and buy from Glasgow Angling Centre both instore and online.

Guideline Exceed Fly Rods Now in Stock!
All models have recommended casting weight written on the blank |
The best features from the last decade of Guideline rods |
Slingshot feel to the single hand rods |
The Guideline Exceed single handed rods have collected inspiration and action curves from the popular Fario rods, a smooth, yet powerful action that accepts a wide variety of casting strokes and styles. The 9'6'' and 10' rods have evolved through several sample generations and revisions. The final result is rods that have a character of their own - fast, yet offering a surprising and very positive “Slingshot” feel during the cast. This will also be highly noticeable during any kind of Spey cast. These rods work very well with both the 4cast lines and the new longer bellied Experience lines from Guideline.
The unique Exceed Switch rod |
The Guideline Exceed Switch rods come in three line weights and are great tools for the angler that wants the best of both worlds. The popular LPXe Switch rods lend part of their action curves to these rods and Guideline then started making small changes here and there to get to the final action. Unique to these rods is the lightness and the slightly shorter butt and full wells handles. This brings out the very best performance from the blank during both single and double handed casting and ensures a very effective and exact stroke, when needed. Building the rods in this way make them so much more alive and fun to fish than the typical, slightly heavy and either extremely soft (regressed action) or stiff Switch rods, so common on the market today.
Amazing value Exceed Salmon rods |
The four new Guideline Exceed double handed rods are inspired by the bestselling Le Cie Rods and make up the range for the Salmon, Sea Trout and Steelhead angler. The 12' and the 12'9 rods are newcomers to the Guideline length range and have immediately shown themselves to be very well suited to many European Rivers. The two longer models will feel equally at home in British Columbia’s Steelhead Rivers as in Norwegian and Scottish Salmon waters. These two rods almost carry the same fast, overdrive kick as their better known “Big Brothers”, LeCie and LPXe and will be a superb rod for the more budget minded angler. Exceed Rods are manufactured exclusively with Japanese High Modulus Carbon cloths and the multi- modulus manufacturing process produces strong, lightweight blanks with low diameters and great balance. The 13'7'' rod was highly recommended in a recent Trout and Salmon magazine rod review.
The new Guideline Exceed can be purchased now from Glasgow Angling Centre both online and instore or come and try one on our casting pool - you will be very impressed!

Prehistoric Fish Tale?
The fossils tell the story! |
"The Aspidorhynchus apparently attacked from in front when the Rhamphorhynchus still flew low above water surface [it presumably hunted by skimming for fish, like sea eagles do], grabbed the left wing level with the distal end of the antebrachium close to the carpus and pulled the Pterosaur under water. While the Rhamphorhynchus rapidly drowned with its last prey in the throat the cause of death of the Aspidorhynchus remains speculative. Evidently, the fish could not swallow the Pterosaur due to its size and bulky skeleton. Furthermore, ganoid fishes like Aspidorhynchus have skulls with limited kinetic options such that they were not suitable to manipulate prey that exceeded the standard gape of the jaws. Obviously, the fish was neither able to swallow the Pterosaur, neither was it able to get rid of its oversized victim. Possibly the aktinofibrils of the tough and leathery wing membrane of the Pterosaur got jammed between the densely packed teeth of the fish. Like most extant fish Aspidorhynchus had no other possibility to get rid of its unwanted victim than trying to shake it loose or swimming rapid spinning or twisting manoeuvres. That the fish in fact tried to get rid of the Pterosaur by vigorous movements of its head is evidenced by the distortion of the left wing finger elements, while the remaining skeleton of the Rhamphorhynchus lies in natural articulation. Apparently, the flight membrane tissue remained jammed between the teeth, while the interphalangeal ligaments of the left wing finger ruptured under the power of the fish tearing at the flight membrane. Finally, the entire wing finger of the drowned Pterosaur was pulled under the antebrachium. Such a distortion can only happen when the proximal part of the flight membrane, likely the thin and structurally weak tenopatagium, was dramatically overextended or even had ruptured. The most likely scenario is that the Aspidorhynchus fought its victim for a period of time, thereby rapidly sinking into the hostile anoxic water layer of the Late Jurassic Eichstรคtt basin, where it was instantly suffocated. Still linked together, both carcasses sank to the sea floor, whereby the Pterosaur contacted the ground first, likely being pushed down by the massive head of the Aspidorhynchus."
Possibly a bit like a prehistoric version of this?
A modern version of events? |

GoPro Now Available at Glasgow Angling Centre!
GAC is proud to announce we are now official stockists of GoPro HERO HD cameras and accessories!
It was 2009 when I first bought and used a headcam while fishing and shooting after I saw a couple of saltwater flyfishing videos on YouTube made with them. In the months that followed I had so many requests from friends and customers about using them that I approached a supplier and GAC became the first tackle shop to stock Tachyon XC headcams and accessories - a proper rugged, waterproof, high quality camera developed for extreme sports. Since then we have sold hundreds of headcams and we always enjoy seeing customers videos and sharing hints and tips we have learned along the way to make their videos better!
GoPro cameras are generally regarded as the very best in the business and are used by more professional athletes, sports filmmakers and hardcore enthusiasts than any other camera in the world. The HD HERO2 is the most advanced GoPro camera yet, wearable and gear mountable, waterproof to 197 feet (60m), capable of capturing professional full 170ยบ wide angle 1080p video and 11 megapixel photos at a rate of 10 photos per second. Whether your goal is to capture a great day out fishing or shooting or you’re gunning for the cover of a magazine, the HD HERO2: Outdoor Edition can help you achieve it and look like a HERO.
Also available from GAC is a full range of mounts and accessories you’re most likely to use during outdoor sports like biking, skiing, fishing, kayaking, shooting and so on.

A Phenomenal Success!
Another record breaking Glasgow Angling Centre Open Weekend has come and gone, and boy was this one a cracker!! It was our best attended event to date with literally thousands of people coming from all over the UK to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in fishing. We even had bus-loads of people come over from Ireland, Wales and Cumbria to savour the unique atmosphere of what is arguably one of the UK's premier, free, fishing events.
