Tying a CDC Heather Fly with Davie McPhail

During the Spring, Hawthorn flies can be seen flitting across fields and hedgerows. Instantly recognisable by their long trailing hindlegs, these flies hatch in their millions and sometimes cause concern when they arrive in people's gardens. due to their large bodies and hindlegs, any gentle breeze can push them off course mid-flight and end up exposed on the surface of Rivers, Streams, Reservoirs and Ponds. The CDC Heather that Davie McPhail ties below is similar to that of a Hawthorn Fly, expect the hind legs are slightly different in that they have an orange flash near the centre and fish know the difference! Get yourself stocked up on these little flies for next season, as they are perfect for Rivers and Streams where wild Trout dwell, however on a Stillwater venue like a reservoir, it's recommended that you cast and slowly retrieve the fly.

All of the materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Centre as listed below, but as always, if you need any help finding materials or substitutes then we'll be happy to help. Time to tie a CDC Heather Fly, with the guidance of Davie McPhail.

Materials Used:
Hook: Fulling Mill All-Purpose Medium size 10 or 12 Thread: Uni-8/0 Black Rib: Uni-Mylar No.14 Pearl Body: Black and Hot Orange Seals Fur or Sub Legs: 6 Dyed Black Pre-Knotted Pheasant Tail Fibres Wing: Dyed Black CDC and Roe Deer Hair

Additional materials: Additionally, Davie made use of Varnish, which he applied to the thread after completing the fly.

Davie's preferred type of whip finish tool can be found HERE!

FishPal evolved out of a series of marketing initiatives for fishing that started with the build up of the largest letting agency on the River Tweed that led to the development of the FishTweed web site. The success of this lead to the birth of FishDee and FishTay and the company name changing to FishSalmon, FishScotland then FishBritain as they grew across the country. As the scope of the company went international FishPal was born.

Who's Attending?

Anne Woodcock, an avid fly fisher and Marketing Director at FishPal, when she's not fishing for Salmon herself she's helping introduce women and children to the sport. Mark Cockburn, as well as running FishPal Mark is a keen angler himself and enjoys nothing better than to be fishing on a river for Salmon or Trout, getting out on the water through the season as well as regularly speaking to the people fishing and managing the river gives him real insight to just how well rivers are performing and the ongoing work needed to support future stocks of salmon.

Mark says, “given the ongoing problems we seem to have with only 1 in 20 smolts returning to our rivers as fully mature salmon, all the work the AST are doing to investigate ongoing issues in the Atlantic Ocean seem to me to make perfect sense and great that FishPal and its customers can help contribute to the ongoing costs of running such projects.”

Tying an International Daddy/Hedgehog with Davie McPhail

As we draw into Autumn, many Dry Fly Anglers will be reeling in the excitement, especially those who love to fish Daddy patterns. With a long body, large wings and clumsy legs, the Daddy Long Legs can be found just about everywhere in the UK. Even though they have large wings, Daddy Long Legs aren't actually very good at flying, any small breeze will send them tumbling down and if they're over a body of water, then they become a Trouts next meal. This fly is perfect if you have the wind at your back, blowing onto a River or if you are at a Stillwater venue, to fish near cover.

All of the materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Centre as listed below, but as always, if you need any help finding materials or substitutes then we'll be happy to help. Time to tie an International Daddy/Hedgehog Fly, with the guidance of Davie McPhail.

Materials Used:
Hook: Fulling Mill Short Shank Special size 12 Thread: Uni-8/0 Tan Body: Tan Closed Cell Foam Sheet Thorax: Hare's Body Fur mixed with UV Dubbing Legs: 6 Pre-Knotted Pheasant Tail Fibres Wing: Well Marked Roe Deer

Additional materials: Additionally, Davie made use of Varnish, which he applied to the thread after completing the fly.

Davie's preferred type of whip finish tool can be found HERE!

RNLI at the Autumn Open Weekend.

The RNLI Safety Roadshow have confirmed they will attend our Autumn Open Weekend Event on the 27th, 28th and 29th of September 2019!

One bit of equipment that could let you be your own life-saver is a lifejacket but these are only effective if they’re in good condition and regularly maintained. The RNLI will be holding a clinic at our Open Weekend  where specially-trained volunteers will inspect your lifejacket, help you find and fix any problems and show you how to carry out your own safety checks .
Lifejacket inspections at the Open Weeeknd

We sat down with Phil Denham from the RNLI to discuss just how important the simple device can be.
Phil said: “The RNLI have launched a campaign to promote lifejackets for anglers. You may also have seen the Henry Gilbey videos online promoting the use of lifejackets. Henry admits he didn’t wear a lifejacket for years, until a tragedy where two brothers drowned on one of his local marks spurred him to get involved and help promote safe angling."

While a lifejacket check isn’t a substitute for a complete qualified annual service, it will find blatant faults and these clinics can be lifesavers. Phil told us:
A chap came to our clinic at the Scottish boat show, his lifejacket had a couple of faults that meant it would not have worked. We were able to re-arm and make it fit for purpose again. A few months later we were holding a clinic at the Holy Loch when the same chap lost his footing on his vessel and fell overboard.
His lifejacket inflated immediately and, with some difficulty, he was helped back to the pontoon and pulled from the water. Later in the day, when he was warm and dry, he came to our stand to explain that the lifejacket he was wearing was the one we had re-armed.
Without his visit a few months prior, he would have been wearing a useless lifejacket and the outcome of the incident could have been different.
Bring along your lifejacket to the Open Weekend at the end of the month and they'll be able to inspect it and give you pointers on how to maintain and keep you safe on the water.
Anyone wanting to contact the RNLI for a lifejacket check can get in touch via their website, rnli.org, or through your local lifeboat station’s community safety officer.
