The winner of Octobers Fish of the Month Competition is Michael Stewart with this picture of a fresh sea-liced Salmon caught from the River Doon near Dalrymple. The judging of the competition was left to our Facebook fans as usual and Michael was the clear winner with 267 likes on our Facebook Gallery!

Our FOTM competition just keeps growing with awesome pictures of  many different fish species from around the world being sent in by our customers and we have had so many great entries the last couple of months we have decided to give a GAC Cap to the entrants that came in 2nd and 3rd place since they did so well!

Tom Bell with his 18lb 3oz cock Salmon, caught on River Ribble on a Loop Opti Power Spey rod, Carron Proline with a sink tip and a 6 inch brown, white and black Sunray. The fish took the Sunray on its first swing after conventional flies blanked!

Micheal Fearns sent us this picture of a 10.5lb Bass he caught while fly fishing from a Kayak in the Solway. The fish was caught on a 9 foot 8 weight fly rod and floating line using an Enrico Puglisi Baitfish pattern tied by himself and fished on a 10lb leader.

Tying a Classic Salmon Fly with Davie McPhail

Davies idea of a practice fly would put us all to shame! It's a long one but there are tons of hints and tips in here that apply to all types of fly tying so well worth a watch! The fly is a Durham Ranger.

Noel Mawhinney was fishing Lough Allen during heavy rain when he caught this 24lb 11oz Pike on a pumped up Rainbow trout bait mounted on Partridge trebles. This fish was closely followed by a 8lb 2oz fish and a 21lb 11oz fish and a great day was had.

7 year old Lewis Gardiner with his first Golden Orfe caught while float fishing at Felton Fence Fishery near Alnwick during the half term holiday. The bait was double maggot fished with a waggler next to a lily bed using an 11ft float rod. One of the things he was most exited about was using his new Eyelevel polarised glasses as he could see the fish swimming around under his float!

After over 10 years of fishing the River Earn for Salmon, Stephen Rodger finally caught his first one, weighing 12lbs and taken on the fly at his first attempt at fly fishing for them. Although not a fresh fish, it put up a great fight before being returned and is a fish he will never forget. The successful fly was a Cascade on a 15lb leader.

Fish of the Month October Entry - Savage Pike!

Paul Bosworth and his son Jack love lure fishing for Pike. They discovered Savage Gear lures only a few months ago via Glasgow Angling Centre and since then their catch results have improved in both number and size. Their favourite SG lure is the 19cm 4play Lip Lure in Rainbow Trout colour. This particular fish, a 19lb Pike was caught on their local river, near a weir. Fishing from high wall they could see everything that was happening, and to their amazement this beauty came up from the depths and savaged the lure!

Chris Harvey caught this Brown Trout from the river Mersey, near Stockport, on a spinner. The fish tipped the scales at 5lb 8oz and was returned to be caught another day!

Dean Cahill was on a family holiday in Spain when he fished the river Edbro for Catfish. He had only caught small Perch before so was pretty exited and near the end of the day he caught this 25lb fish using frozen chicken as bait!

Fish of the Month October Entry - Sutherland Brownie!

Another great start to the month as Octobers FOTM Competition gets going with this cracking wild Trout! Andy MacArthur was fishing in the Sutherland hills in a gale when this huge Brown Trout took his size 10 wet Daddy. He was using his Orvis 10' #5 weight rod, a floating line and Orvis Access reel and a bit of a struggle getting the fish into his scoop net. But his luck held and he measured the Trout at 29" long, before carefully returning the fish!
