This Week's Pattern: The Hummie Booby with Steve Cullen
This week's pattern from Steve Cullen is the Hummie Booby, a combination of two familiar and highly effective stillwater trout flies, the Humungus and the Booby. It's a cracking-looking lure that brings together the movement and flash of a traditional Humungus with the buoyancy of a set of foam booby eyes.
The Humungus has been a favourite among trout anglers for years, particularly when fish are feeding on fry. The combination of a mobile marabou tail, a flashy body and a palmered hackle makes it a great pattern to pull through the water. Add the floating eyes of a Booby and you've got a fly with another dimension, giving you a few more options in how you fish it.
Steve's version is tied on a size 8 Kamasan B175, with a white marabou tail and silver and gold Flashabou providing plenty of movement and sparkle. Silver fritz forms the body, while the barred saddle hackle gives it that familiar Humungus profile. A pair of medium Booby eyes finishes the pattern, adding buoyancy and a distinctive silhouette.
It's certainly one worth having in the box as we move through the colder months. When trout are chasing fry, try varying the speed of your retrieve and introducing pauses. The foam eyes make the fly particularly interesting on sinking-line presentations, where it can rise when the retrieve stops, depending on the balance of line, leader and fly.
