How To Tie: The Quick-Tie Idiot-Proof Beetle With Steve Cullen

This week we're taking a look at Steve Cullen's Quick-Tie Idiot-Proof Beetle, a simple fly pattern that's couldn't be quicker to tie. Whenever there's a breeze and terrestrials on the water this is a devastingly effective pattern for Trout.

Beetle patterns are a brilliant choice, taken naturally by Trout all over the country in rivers and lochs and they don't need to be complicated to work. With a simple foam back, a buggy profile and plenty of buoyancy, it's the kind of fly you can tie quickly and keep stocked in your box.

Steve's version keeps the dressing straightforward and durable, making it a great option for anyone who wants a reliable surface fly without spending ages at the vice. Fish it tight to the bank, around overhanging trees, along weed beds, or anywhere beetles and other terrestrials are likely to end up on the water.

All materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Centre or Edinburgh Angling Centre and are listed below. As always, if you need any help finding materials or substitutes, we'll be happy to help.
