Learn to tie the Best Stillwater Fly Ever with Steve Cullen

There’s always plenty of debate about which fly is the best in the world. Some anglers swear by modern, innovative patterns, while others remain loyal to the classics that have stood the test of time. In truth, there’s no definitive answer, but today we’re taking a look at the fly that Steve Cullen believes deserves the title of the best stillwater fly in the world.

The pattern in question is the Apps Bloodworm. However, Steve’s take on this well-known fly moves away from the traditional bloodworm red. Instead, he opts for olive materials, using olive tying thread along with Flexi-Floss legs. The result is a subtler, more natural-looking variation that still maintains the key characteristics of the original pattern.

To finish the fly, Steve adds a small but important detail: a touch of Scarlet No.4 Glo-Brite at the head. This bright accent acts as a trigger point, helping to grab the attention of any trout patrolling nearby and encouraging a strike.

While the fly can be a little fiddly to tie, it’s certainly worth the effort, especially with the trout season just around the corner in Scotland. If you’re looking to add an effective stillwater pattern to your box this season, Steve’s version of the Apps Bloodworm might just be one to try.
