Match 4 of the league was fished Friday, 28 November on Portobello Promenade, and despite a stiff offshore wind the conditions turned out far better than many of us expected. The sea lay flat calm with that familiar dirty colour that often promises fish—and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

For many of us, it was the first time fishing this venue over high water, and there was a fair bit of uncertainty about how things would unfold. However, any doubts were quickly swept aside as the Whiting arrived in big numbers, providing steady action throughout the evening. What followed was a thoroughly enjoyable and competitive match on what proved to be a cracking and comfortable venue for all.

With only two matches remaining, things couldn’t be closer at the top of the leader board. The points are tight and every fish could make the difference as we head into the rounds.

Top Anglers of the Night

The final results showed just how tight the competition was, with only a handful of points separating the top places:
  • 1st: Gordon McLeod - 21 fish for 445 pts
  • 2nd: Mike Kyle - 19 fish for 397 pts
  • 3rd: Ian Campbell - 19 fish for 388 pts

The longest fish prize was shared between Eryk Janik and David Cooper, each landing a 23cm Whiting. Well earned, especially given the conditions.

A huge well done to everyone who toughed it out in conditions better suited to a storm-chasing documentary than a fishing match. On to the next one!

Special thank you to Nigel Duncan for providing his photography skills for the evening - Nigel is a journalist for The Edinburgh Reporter, who's experienced in news, business, arts, sport and travel. You can find all of Nigel's work on The Edinburgh Reporter and his website.
