Match 5 of this year’s Winter Shore League was fished December 12th at Newhaven Breakwater, and what a session it turned out to be. The venue produced some incredibly hectic sport, with 22 anglers landing an astonishing 800 fish between them; an average of 36 fish per angler!

Full results are listed below, but a special mention has to go to Gav Owen, whose winning bag of 66 fish in just three hours was a truly outstanding display of speed fishing. To put the night into perspective, an angler with over 40 fish didn’t even make the top ten, which says everything about just how good the fishing was. Newhaven continues to prove itself as a fantastic venue that simply keeps on producing.

Top Anglers of the Night
- 1st. Gav Owen - 66 fish - 1422pts
- 2nd. Gordon Lyall - 59 fish - 1287pts
- 3rd. Gordon McLeod - 52 fish - 1126pts
The longest fish of the night was a 42cm cod, caught by David Cooper.
As expected, whiting made up the bulk of the catch, but there was also a healthy showing of Dabs and Codling, with one angler landing an impressive eight Codling. A Sea Scorpion and a solitary Poor Cod added a bit of variety to the species list.
The league standings are now incredibly tight, with just a single point separating the top two anglers. A couple of excellent recent results have also propelled Gordon McLeod into the top three on fish points, with Davy Cooper sitting in fifth place only one point further back.

It’s also worth remembering that Edinburgh Angling Centre employees are ineligible for the sponsor’s prizes. With two staff members currently sitting in the top four, it’s shaping up so that three of the top five anglers will take home the prizes.
Everything is still to play for at the final match, which will take place next Friday, 19/12/25, at the Joppa end of Portobello Beach. Names for this match will be taken early next week, keep an eye out for the post!
