Edinburgh Winter Shore League – Match 3 Report: A Wild Night on Newhaven Breakwater
Date: Friday, 14 November
Location: Newhaven (East), Edinburgh
Event: Match 3 – Edinburgh Winter Shore League
Match 3 on Newhaven Breakwater will be remembered not just for the fishing, but for the sheer chaos delivered by a ferocious easterly wind. Conditions were wild from the start—spray blowing sideways, gear rattling, and anglers fighting to keep their footing as the gusts tore down the breakwater.

Unfortunately, the wind claimed plenty of casualties. So far, reports include two broken rod sections and four snapped rod rings. At least two seat boxes were blown clean over, with the entire contents of one ending up in the water. Add to that two buckets, two clipboards complete with scorecards, and a miscellaneous selection of bait and tackle now resting somewhere in the Firth of Forth.
A truly brutal night for the gear… but not for the fishing.

Despite the conditions, the fish were unfazed. The 19 hardy anglers who braved the elements recorded an impressive 253 fish. Whiting made up the bulk of the catches, but there were also some quality fish landed, including Cod up to 43cm and a tidy 34cm Flounder. Newhaven once again proved itself as a venue that can produce fish even when the weather does its best to shut things down.

- Chris Cooper: 28 fish, 608 pts
- Kyle Taylor: 22 fish, 470 pts
- Chris Anderson: 20 fish, 468 pts
Longest fish of the match was a cracking 43cm Cod, also landed by Chris Anderson.
A huge well done to everyone who toughed it out in conditions better suited to a storm-chasing documentary than a fishing match. On to the next one!
