We caught up with one of the Veniard Pro-Team member Ed Ford to chat about one of his favourite patterns and it's creation..
Ed will be attending our Autumn Open Weekend, September 26th-28th! He will be on our Infamous Fly Tyers Row where you'll be able to ask him questions about this fly, as well the array of other patterns he'll be showcasing on the weekend!
"The Kingfisher"
Its origin comes from a request by a dear friend a few years ago and since then I have tied well over 300 in various sizes and hooks for Brown Trout, Sea Trout and Salmon. I haven't really publicised this fly very much, although it is a favourite of mine to tie for the story behind it.
Around 3 years ago, a dear friend of mine lost his wife. After her passing, his daughter invited him to visit her and her husband down south. This is where he found out that his Son-in-Law was an avid fly angler.
My friend approached me and asked if I could design a fly which he could gift to his Son-in-law and his friends, so I had a dozen or so created. His request was for a wet style fly in the colours of the Kingfisher in tribute to his club, the Kingfishers.
I came up with the design relatively quickly and played around with the colours to find the perfect combination. Once I was happy with everything, the Kingfisher was created and has been a popular request amongst customers and friends since.
The fly has produced results time and time again, catching Brown Trout in rivers and lochs, Sea Trout in some rivers and plenty of Salmon. If you would like to see some of these, I will have a display at the Open Weekend, so everyone can see them first-hand and close up.
