Learn how to tie the Viva Green Mayfly Nymph with Steve Cullen

Today, we're checking out a classic fly pattern that holds a special place in angling history. Steve Cullen recalls it as “one of the first fly fishing things I saw on television,” referring to when he watched John Wilson fishing his variant of Richard Walker’s renowned Mayfly—also known as Dick Walker’s Mayfly.

Originally developed by Richard Walker, this Mayfly imitation is a highly regarded trout pattern, still widely used throughout the UK and beyond. Designed to imitate the mayfly nymph, which is a key food source for trout, especially during the prolific Mayfly season. it remains a staple in many anglers fly boxes.

John Wilson’s adaptation introduces Viva Green to the body, enhancing the fly's visual appeal and making it an even more irresistible target for trout.
