Learn to tie the Fly that won the UK Bank Final!

Today, we're taking a closer look at the fly pattern that secured victory at the UK Bank Final at Farmoor. The winning angler, Tony Baldwin—now crowned National Champion—relied on this very pattern to claim the title. During a practice session, Tony and Steve were out on the water testing various methods. It was during this time that Steve refined a technique that turned this fly into an absolute killer.

Interestingly, the origins of this pattern trace back to a request from Phil Dixon, who commissioned a fly called the McReed. However, there’s a twist: the fly tyer who created Phil’s version was colour blind. As a result, the colours used didn’t match the original brief—but oddly enough, the unconventional combination proved highly effective. That happy accident has become a staple ever since.

All materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Centre as listed below, as always, if you need any help finding materials or substitutes then we'll be happy to help.
