Edinburgh New Year Shore League Match 1 - Fishing Well Below Freezing

The 2025 New Year League kicked off on 10/01/2025 with Portobello Beach as the venue for the twenty-three anglers who braved the well below freezing temperatures. It was tough going, with some slow fishing compared to previous nights on this mark. Fair play to everyone though, they fished hard in the conditions counting in 48 fish of size in total including Flounder, Whiting, Dab, Coalfish and Rockling.

Some of Finns Match Photography

Thanks to Edinburgh Angling Centre staff member Finn who got some fantastic photographs during the first match. It was a cold clear evening that showed off the beauty of shore fishing in the city, even if when there wasn't the usual hectic catches.

The league has grown in popularity since it began, and we're extremely grateful to those of you who have joined - and would encourage anyone considering joining to get in touch. Organised by EAC Manager Ian with prizes sponsored by Fishingmegastore and Cox & Rawle it's made for a competitive but friendly league and an excellent opportunity for any budding match angler to learn from some fantastic guys.

Top three on the night were:

  1. Ian Campbell, 14 fish for 317pts
  2. Steve Souter 6 fish for 136pts

  3. Gordon Mcleod 5fish for 124pts

Gordon McLeod also landed the longest fish of the evening with a 33cm Flounder.
