Edinburgh Winter Angling Shore League 2024 - Round 2 Results and Tactics

Match two of the 2024 Edinburgh Winter League was fished on the 25th of October on Portobello Beach (Joppa) with 25 anglers taking part. It was another good night for fishing in the city with 123 landed for the scorecards plus quite a few undersized with bags made up of mostly Whiting along with odd Coalies, Dabs, Rockling, Flounder and Codling.

The Winner on the night was Chris Empson with his bag of 18 fish, Chris also split the prize for longest fish with Kyle Taylor and Willie Stafford all recording a top catch of 22cm. anglers fished in calm condition for most of the night with 123 fish caught between the 25 anglers along the beach.

Top Methods: 

Once again the favoured tactics were 3 up scratching rigs on size 4 or 6 baited with Mackerel, worm or peeler crab baits. 

Regularly changing baits is the name of the game in this style of fishing as it ensures you are fishing fresh baits that are well presented, with some anglers fishing to their watch, recasting every 8 to 10 minutes. 

With calm conditions on a small tide most anglers opted to fish 1-3oz weights with heavier style grip leads not being required. Fish were caught at all ranges on the night. 

Continental style rods or sea quiver tip style rods are suited to this style of fishing in calm conditions due to their increased sensitivity, matched up with a fixed spool reel loaded with relatively light (0.35) line.
