How to tie the Original MOP Fly by Steve Cullen

Today we are taking a look at the Original MOP Fly, tied by Steve Cullen. This fly is rather controversial and it fishes very well after a flood. It's distinct look makes a lot of anglers think that there's no way this pattern will work, but it works and Steve assures us of that as well.

Part of the controversy surrounding this fly is the fact that it's mostly banned from competition venues. due to it's unnatural size, colouration and sink speed, any fish that spots this fly has never seen anything like it before and therefore strikes at it. In fact it's so good at what it does it's not only banned from UK competitions but a lot of US competitions too!

Besides it's controversy, it's a cracking fly to use on stillwaters and reservoirs, it's apparently very good at picking up Grayling, but Steve mentions he's never tried it, but he assures us that Trout will happily pick this fly up, time and time again.

All of the materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Centre as listed below, but as always, if you need any help finding materials or substitutes then we'll be happy to help.
