Today we are checking out Steve Cullen's Cow Dung Dry Fly. This fly is a great imitation of an orange/yellow terrestrial Dung Fly (Scatophagidae) that's abundant on waters around the country where there are cows grazing nearby you'll have seen them buzzing are cow pats. The naturals are often blown onto the water and the Trout love them!
Steve uses a cowled wing of Tan Dry Yarn that's the same length as the fly, slightly cloaking over a scuffed up thorax which also adds to the buoyancy of the fly perfect for spotting takes and keeping it fishing for longer.
He also uses a combination of colours to match the hatch and adding a little sparkle that makes it a surprisingly effective pattern through the summer and autumn when the flies are buzzing around. Tied on a size 12 but just as effective in other sizes to suit conditions, if you fish upland waters or anywhere close to pastures this is one to have ready in your box.
