Learn how to tie the Popperfry by Steve Cullen

Today we are checking out a fly with a reputation, the Popperfry by Steve Cullen. Steve actually created this pattern just over a decade ago and has provided him with great results during competitions and casual day's out fishing. So let's see what makes it so special!

Starting with the hook, a size 10 Wet fly hook, simple as it gets, but then a booby eye which has been cut in half at a 45degree angle is placed onto the top of the hook providing a buoyant tip. The body is comprised of two materials, a Straggle strip in Olive and a Squirrel strip, folded back on itself to create a lovely "fin". To give it an even more fishy fry appearance, a set of orange eyes are attached to the fly, however Steve points out that these eyes are of vinyl construction which aren't found anymore!

To hide all those threads towards the head of the fly, a dubbing is used to cover and protect those threads and that creates the Popperfry! A great looking pattern and from Steve's experience, a fly that won't disappoint!

All of the materials needed to tie this fly are available from Glasgow Angling Centre as listed below, but as always, if you need any help finding materials or substitutes then we'll be happy to help.
