We're pleased to announce that Dr Willie Yeomans of the Clyde River Foundation will be exhibiting at The GAC Autumn Open Weekend 27th - 29th September.
The Clyde River Foundation was founded in 1999 with the aim of improving understanding of all aspects of river management, and in particular to provide a permanent, professional fisheries science presence in the catchment. The Foundation employs four full-time scientists and is based within the University of Glasgow’s Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine.
The foundation see The Clyde is a great example of a 'recovering river'. It is a river where salmon were once extinct due to pollution and man-made structural changes. It now boasts a recovering salmon population but much work is still to be done to ensure the future of the 'Mighty Clyde'. If you're like us and love fishing on the Clyde, come along and speak with Dr Yoemans and his team it's an excellent experience.
One of the trusts proudest success stories actually takes place away from the river.
Their Clyde in the classroom Initiative has been going from strength to strength for nearly 20 years.
The project which aims to bring the life of the river into a classroom setting will this year have reached their 30,000th child participating and have worked in nearly 400 schools in the river Clyde catchment area through the Clyde in the Classroom initiative.
The project aims to put trout eggs into a classroom and over a few weeks help the class raise these eggs into young fish. The whole class is then taken to their local river to release the fish they have raised.
It seems more and more youngsters these days would rather be in front of a computer screen than outside, often they're not given the same opportunities to explore the world around them. This is an amazing idea that brings the wildlife to them even if they live in the city giving them an insight into what happens around them, while in the class the scientists explain to the children about life in the river. This instils some understanding of how the system works as a whole and lets them see what an important part they can play.
As well as education, the River Trust undertakes a variety of research on the river and it's tributaries including a long standing electrofishing program.This accurate measure of how the Clyde is doing in terms of fish population and river diversity in turn helps understand who the river is improving and how actions can be taken to help it continue.
In many ways the Clyde is a superb success story. Once in the river, Salmon now thrive. but Dr Yeomans stresses that there is still much to be done to bring the Clyde to it’s former glory.
