First Look - The Mackenzie DTX Perflex Spey Rod

The new Mackenzie DTX Perflex Spey Rod!
The Salmon fly rod market is a tough one to crack, especially if you are just one guy against a whole host of huge brands! It is even tougher to to bring a Spey rod to market at a reasonable price point that will stand out and compete with rods at almost double the RRP, but 3 times World Speycasting Champion, Scott Mackenzie, has done just that, and the new Perflex range from his DTX stable is now in stock at Glasgow Angling Centre!
We tested the 14ft #9 model with a range of lines and heads
We recently took one of the new rods out on the water for a test cast and what was immediately apparent was how light in the hand these rods are for such a low price point. The rod is built to the same high standard we have come to expect from the Mackenzie brand, and although Scott's fussy attention to detail can cause frustrating delays when we are eagerly waiting new DTX gear, it certainly pays off when you see the finished article in your hand. A smart, no frills, black finished blank with a top quality, modern style, cork handle give no indication of the low price tag on these rods and the genuine Pac Bay guides and classy Black downlocking reel seat engraved with Scott's signature and a neat DTX logo to help line up the reel prove that no corners have been cut and these rods still ooze quality just like their higher priced stable mates, the DTX G2 and DTX Shooting Head rods!
The low price of the DTX Perflex range doesn't stop it oozing quality!
We cast the 14ft Perflex rod with a range of popular Spey lines and shooting heads in #8/9 and #9/10 weights, and found the rod to be an easy casting but very capable, smooth actioned rod, ideal for casters of all abilities (which suits me down to the ground!) and certainly gives a lot of more expensive rods a run for their money! My favourite line we cast on it during this short review was the #9/10 Mackenzie DTX G2 Shooting head which absolutely whizzed out once I found a fairly short casting stroke that suited me and the rod best.
The Perflex still uses the best quality fittings and finishes!
The new Perflex range of Double Handed rods from Mackenzie have been developed by some of the best casters and anglers in the business utilising over a hundred years of combined experience on the river bank to create a quality, high performance rod at a price making them more accessible to all, without compromising performance. In fact when some of the staff guessed the selling price of the Perflex (a game we are pretty good at!) the closest figure was around £100 more than the RRP of the new rods!
No corners have been cut, all the nice little touches even at this price!
The new Mackenzie DTX Perflex rods and the new DTX G2 trout rods are in stock now at Glasgow Angling Centre and available to see and buy both instore and online from just £289 - check them out HERE!
