Trout and Salmon Magazine - 15ft Salmon Rod Review

This month in Trout and Salmon magazine they have one of their big Salmon fly rod reviews, which always a source of much debate among Salmon fishers all over the world! This months issue looks at rods around 15ft in length, with the focus new models for 2013! Top casting instructors Jim Curry and Clive Mitchelhill tested them with a variety of lines over two days and the test sample included the following rods:
The Hardy Artisan - Jim Curry described this rod as a powerhouse! He reckoned that he created his best loops and longest casts with this rod. Both Jim and Clive felt the rod needed a little more weight to get the best out of it in their review.

The G.Loomis NRX - Both reviewers thought that this rod felt very light in the hand for a 15 footer and with the right line set up you could fish with it all day and found the action to be deceptively fast!

The LTS Across - Jim Curry liked this rod but felt it was more suited to shooting heads than full Spey lines. Clive put it in his top six rods for the whole test! A well finished rod that will deservedly find a following.

The Sage ONE - Jim found this rod to be versatile with stunning cosmetics and a nice handle, with an action a little less tippy than most Sage rods. Clive also loved the finish and the slightly more traditional feel of the rod.

The Daiwa NewEra SLR - Jim made some beautiful long casts with this rod, creating fabulous line speed and finding it has very fast tip recovery. Clive also liked the slim comfortable handle.

The Guideline LXi - Both Jim and Clive liked this rod a lot! Already looking to be a best seller the replacement for the LeCie was praised for its ease of use, handle shape and weight ratings on the blank. you can also see our own review of this rod HERE.

The MacKenzie Perflex - Jim found that although this rod prefers shooting head lines, it could cast Spey lines just as well. Clive thought the Mackenzie shooting heads were a perfect match for the rod and felt it was a nice piece of kit.

The Scierra HMX - Jim said that this was a fast, tip action rod for casting shooting heads and liked the reel seat and cosmetics. He found it to be very stiff in the middle and butt sections.

The Vision Atom - Both Jim and Clive found the Atom to be a user friendly rod and great value for money. They liked the overall finish and felt that this would be an ideal rod for anglers wishing to improve their Speycasting.

The Shakespeare Oracle Scandi - Jim thought this entry level shooting head rod worked superbly, perhaps better than some more expensive rods. Clive found it to be a good shooting head rod at a very attractive price. These rods will be available to buy at GAC in June 2013 but will no doubt sell out very quickly so we have put them on our website so you can pre-order yours now!
