First Look - Mackenzie DTX G2 9' #5

This new rod from Mackenzie DTX is not the type of rod you would immediately associate with Spey casting and Salmon fishing superstar Scott Mackenzie, so we were keen to get our hands on one to see what it would be like. Following on from the success of the 10ft DTX G2 rod, Mackenzie are further expanding into the single hand rod market with a new 9' #5, 9' #6 and 9'6'' #6 rods squarely aimed at the UK's massive trout fishing market. This weekend I finally got my paws on a 9' #5 and put it through it's paces - and I have to say I'm impressed!
The versatile new DTX G2 9' #5 from Mackenzie
I used the rod with the new Airflo SuperDri Exceed line in WF5 and it immediately became apparent that this rod is super smooth to cast - no surprise if you know that one of the guys on the team behind these rods is Andy Toft, and if you have ever been taught, mentored by or seen one Andy's demonstrations you will know just how smooth a caster he is! The rod performed well at all ranges and with different casts and is a breath of fresh air in a rod market crammed with 'specialist' fly rods. This is a rod I would happily use on small stillwaters at distance, with buzzers and dry's or equally on a river, roll casting and mending while fishing bugs or a Duo set-up, it's a true all-rounder and the build quality and finish are, just like it's bigger Spey casting brothers, second to none. And priced well below the equivalent rods many of Mackenzies competitors from the Spey casting world these are sure to become a best seller!
Awesome build quality and aesthetics!
