GAC Autumn Open Weekend 2017 - Fly Tyers Row Confirmed!

One of the most popular attractions at our Open Weekends is always the fly tying demonstrations, and our next one coming up on September 29th to 1st October 2017 will be no different! Our new improved instore format will be bringing you some of the UK's top fly tyers, sponsored as always by Veniard and supported by Partridge of Redditch - making this the premier fly tying event in Scotland! All of these fly dressers are at the very top of their game and will gladly go out of their way to show you how to perform the latest techniques and how to tie any style of fly you can think of.

They will even take the time to guide you round our massive fly tying department during their scheduled 'floor time', helping you to choose the right equipment and best materials from our extensive range, plus you can take advantage of some great deals on hooks and materials as well as a few new product launches over the weekend, so don't miss out and come to Scotland's biggest FREE angling event!

Plus we will be running have a go fly tying sessions with Get Hooked on Fishing so kids and grown ups alike can try their hand at tying their own flies for the first time - just ask instore!

Ali Hutchens
Ali Hutchens has been a keen fisherman for the past 40 years. He started coarse fishing with his father as a young boy and was introduced to fly fishing by his grandfather. He has been fortunate enough to fish on many of Scotland's salmon rivers through his unrivalled passion for the sport and has guided on the River Tweed and the River Tay. He is a very keen tyer of salmon flies and has become well known on social media and at various fishing shows for his intruders tied taking inspiration for traditional salmon fly patterns. He has written articles for Total Flyfisher on both salmon flies and end of season salmon fishing.

Ian McKenzie
Ian Mckenzie retired from the position of Technical Manager at Fulling Mill after 17 years at the end of 2010.  His position involved developing new patterns, turning people’s ideas into commercial propositions, sourcing all necessary materials and hooks, tying samples, and maintaining quality standards. Since his retirement he has continued tying flies for personal customers and has even found time to tie some for himself. An enthusiastic fisherman since the age of 10, living close to and fishing the Thames but graduating to fly fishing for Trout at Weirwood Reservoir in Sussex at 18, and subsequently fishing around the UK for trout, salmon, and Grayling, Ian has been tying his own flies for the last 40 years. Recently he has also taken to fishing for Carp on the fly – great fun! Ian looks forward to meeting many tyers at the show and will be happy to spend time with anybody who has specific problems and needs a hand.

Allan Liddle
Based in Morayshire Scotland, GAIA qualified Trout instructor Allan Liddle has been a regular contributor to Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Magazine since 2001. Allan specialises in wild Trout from wild places throughout the scottish mainland and the outer isles in both running and still water and is equally as happy on the largest rivers and lochs, through to the smallest streams and lochans. Although he enjoys all forms of fly fishing, Allan has a special passion for fishing dries, claiming 'The anticipation and visual thrill of the take is by far the most exciting and satisfying aspect of the sport.'

Scott Aitkin
Born in Falkirk, Scott grew up in a family of keen fishermen from his Grandfather, Father, Uncles and Cousins, He mostly fished the Highland lochs of Scotland and would often spend school holidays on Loch Arkaig fishing for wild Brownies. His first ever fly caught trout was from this very loch on a Black Zulu!  These days, Scott can generally found doing the rounds within the Scottish competition circuit, but also enjoys trips further afield such as Orkney and the occasional trip down south. That is of course if you can get him off the vice long enough!

Darryl Mooney
Darryl is the UK and Ireland Sales Director for Partridge of Redditch and has been tying for over 36 years. He grew up fishing for wild brownies on his local River Lagan in Northern Ireland and this remains his passion to this day. A committed advocate of catch and release, he has a particular interest in all aspects of Euro Nymphing and will be demonstrating tying his Woven Czech Nymphs as well as being on hand to offer advice on the range of Partridge Hooks and Sprite Hooks on all three days.  http://www.partridge-of-redditch.co.uk/

Glasgow Angling Centre September 2017 Open Weekend Coming Soon!

It’s almost the end of another great summer of fishing and that can only mean one thing to the avid angler – the Glasgow Angling Centre 2017 Autumn Open Weekend is just around the corner!

Meet the Stars of Fishing
This year Scotland’s largest FREE angling event will be held from September 29th until October 1st, 2017, and this one is set to be the best yet! The team will be making a number of improvements to the format this year, but all your favourite bits of the show will be retained. Every major tackle brand in the industry will be in attendance with their latest products on show and experts will be on hand to talk you through the latest developments in every aspect of fishing. There will be FREE fishing tuition available for all types of angling, from fly casting lessons and coarse fish taster session for kids, to slide shows and rig building workshops. Whatever your preferred style of fishing, there’s something for everyone.

If you are passionate about fishing or the great outdoors, you really don’t want to miss our Autumn event. Dedicated anglers travel to Glasgow from all over the UK and even abroad - and it is easy to see why. There is more to see and do for the keen fisherman than any other angling show in the UK. With almost 30 years in the trade, GAC know exactly what anglers want to see and that’s why we have hundreds of rods and reels set up and on display, for you to touch and try. You can have a go with any fly rod you like on our bespoke casting pool or nearby canal basin if you want to try a salmon fly rod. This is by far the best way to make sure you have chosen the best tool for your needs, be it from Greys, Orvis, Guideline, Wychwood, Scott, Hardy, Vision, Winston, Loop, Sage or any one of the dozens of top brands in stock.

Don't Miss It!
We also have the UK’s biggest range of angling apparel and waders. The walls of our clothing section are jam packed from floor to ceiling with jackets, trousers and waders from Simms, Patagonia, Hodgman, Scierra, Airflo, Vass and much more. We have a huge selection of fishing flies, from every major supplier in the trade. Chose from the likes of Fulling Mill, Fario Fly, Atlantic Flies, Craig Barr, Dragon and Caledonian Flies. So our Autumn event gives you the perfect opportunity to restock those depleted fly boxes with winter patterns for the coming months. We also have a massive range of fly tying gear which takes up a significant portion of the store and our comprehensive Sea and Coarse fishing departments are bulging with goodies from all the best-known brands. Alternatively, if lure fishing is your thing then GAC has more fishing lures in stock and on display than any tackle shop in Europe and has become a Mecca for keen predator anglers in recent years for this very reason. Chose from all the latest and greatest from Savage Gear, Westin, Rapala, Salmo and more.

Loads to See and Do at the Open Weekend

With so much on offer, you can easily spend a whole day in the store, but it is not just about buying shiny new gear. September 2017's event is more focused on you, the angler, learning more and getting more from your equipment. That's why during this event we will have more free tuition, demonstrations and workshops so you are equipped with all the latest knowledge for your next fishing trip.

Guaranteed to be a great day out
Things you can expect include FREE rig building and bait preparation workshops, casting tuition, fly tying demonstrations, lure tank demos, kids activities and fishing taster sessions with Get Hooked on Fishing, fly casting demos and we've brought in the best guys from around the world to show you how!

GETTING THERE

Just a couple of minutes drive from Glasgow’s M8 motorway, you will easily find the huge store.  It's an angler’s paradise with its own spacious car park and more than 50 trained, knowledgeable staff, eager to help you tackle your angling problems, whatever your interest may be. The store is the nearest thing you will ever get to a fishing tackle Aladdin’s cave, boasting a mind-boggling 40,000 different products on display. It is one rare opportunity where you can see and touch rods, reels and equipment you might want to buy and fish with, all under one roof.

Loads of Free Parking
There are refreshments on site, so you can enjoy a coffee and a bite to eat. Most tackle-shops can't offer their customers the same level of service as the GAC. Not only does it stock the single-largest range of tackle and clothing in Europe, but there is ample space in which customers can try before they buy.
The store is just two minutes drive from Glasgow's M8 motorway and is easily found. It also has its own large car park. Inside you can hold and compare tackle under one high ceiling. There are more than 1,500 rods on display, and you are welcome to get them off the racks and try them out on the 30m casting pool or the neighbouring canal basin. The same goes for the hundreds of reels and fly-lines. If you are an armchair angler you can pick up the latest books, DVDs and catalogues.

In the last couple of years GAC has hosted some memorable Open Weekends, with the last one in March 2017 being the biggest and best attended yet breaking all records and attracting over 2000 anglers from all over the country. We anticipate another fantastically attended event this Autumn so don't miss out.  Get yourself along to the September 2017 Open Weekend, indulge yourself and join us for Scotland's Biggest Free Angling Event.
