Revive the Clyde Confirm for GAC Open Weekend

Revive the Clyde will be attending Glasgow Angling Centre's Open Weekend.  They will be raising awareness about the serious decline of the Firth of Clyde as a major recreational sea angling destination.
Revive the Clyde
To put things into perspective, from 1900 - 1960 the Firth of Clyde seabed was full of life with a rich and delicate underwater habitat.  The local fishing industry thrived where huge populations of fin-fish and big catches that supported coastal communities were the norm.  There were plenty of fish in the sea.

Then from 1984 onwards things started to change.  Recreational anglers flocked to the clyde, fishing pressure increased and the marine ecosystem was threatened.  More and more trawling and dredging led to less and less fish making it to catchable size; the Clyde became over-fished and under-stocked.  The diverse habitats were ultimately altered with the loss of vital sea-grasses and corals which shelter and feed young fin-fish populations.

The Shocking State of the Clyde Seabed
With overfishing, seabed destruction and the removal of fishing restrictions, the Clyde is no longer a major recreational sea angling destination.  Only a shellfish fishery is left and the loss of diversity leave the Clyde as a fishery vulnerable to collapse.
However Revive the Clyde are working tirelessly to raise awareness and gain support in the belief that it's never too late to save the Firth of Clyde from total collapse.  It can recover and sustain a healthy fishing economy with the right management in place.

If you want to find out more about the vital work of Revive the Clyde, you can come and meet them at Glasgow Angling Centre's Open Weekend where they will be able to give you more information about this important issue. They urgently need support so please sign up to their Cyde Charter.

There is something for everyone at our Open Weekends, that's why they are the biggest in Scotland!  With free parking, free entry, loads of things to see and do, and of course loads of amazing bargains on all types of fishing tackle.  Keep an eye out on Facebook, Twitter and instore for more information on what's going on at the event!  Plus don't forget you can register to receive a FREE GIFT on the day.  Click HERE for details.

Tronix and Jake Schogler Confirm for GAC Open Weekend!

We are very pleased to announce that Tronix pro team member, Jake Schogler, will be attending the Glasgow Angling Centre Autumn Open Weekend Event on the 26th, 27th and 28th of September 2014! Tronix has quickly risen to the forefront of UK sea angling as a brand who brings the very latest in tackle and techniques from Europe and Japan at prices to suit any pocket and are at the forefront of the fast moving LRF scene that is sweeping the UK! Jake Schogler is a light lure and LRF expert with vast experience of using light gear in Scotland, and will be instore all weekend to answer any questions you might have about this style of fishing - so don't be shy!
Jake has been flure fishing since the age of 8 and has always had a fascination with fish and fishing. Born in Scunthorpe, he moved to Dunbar in Scotland aged 5 and lived right on the rocky beach spending every day finding fish in the rock pools and fishing in the harbour with a wee hand line. When he was 8 he got my first spinning rod and his love affair with lure fishing began!
When he turned 16 my first job was in a tackle shop, Forrest and Sons in Kelso, he doesn't remember doing much work but sure did a lot of fishing!  A couple of years later he was working in another fishing tackle shop selling antique tackle where it was his job to catalogue and describe antique lures. This also gave Jake access to American fishing tackle and he spent most of his wages on lures from the States and began to use them for Pollack, Perch, Pike and Bass. In the intervening years he fished all over the country for Coarse, Game and Sea species before progressing to Europe chasing Largemouth Bass in France, Spain and Cyprus. Apart from Carp all of his big fish had fallen to lures of one type or another and he was always interested in the more finesse styles of fishing.
Then a few years ago he discovered The Rockfish Files, an online magazine put together by Jersey Bass guides about a new style of finesse fishing in the sea, Light Rock Fishing (LRF), and he found it to be inspirational - the refined tackle, the techniques, it was like they took what he was already doing and refined it to a point where his 1-10gram rod and 10lb braid set up seemed heavy! He ordered his first LRF rod and the rest as they say is History!
Over the past 4 years he has been involved in a thriving online community, writing and blogging about the fun and ultimately extremely successful side of the sport. He has caught an incredible array of species with this style as well as many specimen sized fish, developing new techniques and a new understanding of just how predatory many of our UK species are. Check out his blog here - http://schogskyandhutch.blogspot.co.uk/

Fish Recreations Confirmed for GAC Open Weekend September 2014!

An amazing brace of Grayling!
We are pleased to announce that Open Weekend favourite and top fish artist, John Edwards from Fish Recreations, will be once again attending our Open Weekend Event on the 26th, 27th and 28th of September 2014 and following on from previous years success he will be exhibiting a new selection of his amazing works of fish art, many of which he has made specifically for our show!
Fresh out of the mould!
Fish replicas are growing in popularity over more traditional fish taxidermy and due to their more versatile and ornamental format, are often bought as artworks even by those who have never caught a trophy fish! Why choose a replica from Fish Recreations? There are many advantages to choosing a replica over a traditional taxidermy mount, the most obvious being that the fish is released to fight and grow another day. These days big fish are becoming harder to find, and some species are in decline with strict catch and release policies now in force on many waters worldwide.
Every individual scale is hand painted multiple times for depth
Once a mould has been taken from a dead specimen, a countless number of casts can be taken from that one mould, meaning no more fish of that size need to be taken from wild stocks. Fish replicas have been made in the USA for many many years, resulting in a huge choice of casts (blanks) to choose from. There is no ugly shrinkage or grease bleed associated with some poorly done traditional mounts, all Salmonid and all salt water species are notorious for "grease bleed as their heads and bodies are packed with natural oils that are all but impossible to remove completely, If undertaken at all, skin mounts of these species in particular should ideally be built with artificial heads and adipose fins. Also there is no fungus, insect infestations, smells or other deterioration that is often associated with some traditional fish taxidermy mounts.
Each piece is hand painted to match the original fish perfectly!
A good fish replica will be indistinguishable from a traditional fish mount, in fact it will often look even better! Replicas are also much more robust than traditional mounts, handy when life hands out knocks and bumps, and in most cases there is no need for additional expensive covers or cases (depending on type of habitat base) and pricing is often much lower compared with traditional fish taxidermy.
A variety of mounting options are available!
John says "I have always liked making things, and since I can remember I have drawn and painted, I am self taught apart from an "old" A in 'O′ level in art at school. (That shows my age!). After years of doing commissions part time on my art work I gradually became less motivated, I needed some thing more. As a keen fisherman I happened to chance upon an American web site with someone selling Fish replicas, I was hooked! This combines model making and painting, plus most anglers practice catch and release, (apart from "edible" fish such as trout and salmon). Most species are available as part built models from the USA; these still need lots of work done on them using dermal type tools and epoxy resins etc to get them ready to paint. Then I have to construct the base or diorama. To make replicas from actual fish, rocks, plants etc I had to learn the basics of moulding and casting in numerous materials, (I am still am learning) I use numerous types of materials. For painting modern day paints are a joy to use and I use a leading brand of Acrylics, plus the appropriate mediums. The result is a model fish that should last more than a life time."

With Fish Recreations you can have your catch of a lifetime "caught" in incredible life like detail, even though your fish was returned safely to the water. Usually all that is needed from you are a few measurements, and one or two photographs of your prize before you return it to the water to enable John to match your fish species and size exactly. Each commission is completely handmade and painted, and some works can take many months to complete. Time is not taken into consideration with this type of artwork. Check out the photos on their website or popular Facebook Page to see the stunning attention to detail for yourself! We also have a selection of Johns work on display instore for all our customers to see all year round should you like to view one in person!
