New TV series on Five - Chris Tarrant Goes Fishing!

Chris Tarrant and John Horsey have a new angling TV series starting soon on UK terrestrial TV! Chris Tarrant Goes Fishing starts on the 1st of November 2013, on Channel 5 at 7pm and has four episodes featuring angling destinations across the world!

As a professional angler and Hardy pro guide, John Horsey likes nothing more than to explore the world’s most exciting and challenging fishing environments and pit his skills against what the world’s waters can offer. In a recent set of visits to such locations he accompanied friend and TV Celebrity/Presenter (and avid angler) Chris Tarrant. In a series of four new TV episodes They tackle a variety of species/styles in all weathers - some within their comfort zone, some not. There is no doubting the deep affinity and love they share for our sport, but the series is so much more than just fishing, it provides a candid and insightful portrayal of both Chris and John, as individuals, as explorers and as friends. They meet some extraordinary people, visit some fascinating venues and enjoy an enriching partnership that provides some wonderful memories.
Episode 1 – The Maldives

Chris Tarrant and John Horsey first venture to the beautiful sport fishing paradise of the Maldives. Embraced by the crystal clear turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is quite simply a dream location. The picture postcard setting provides a romantic background to some big fish battles both Chris and John enjoy. Sailfish, Wahoo and Amberjacks along with Giant Trevally offered magnificent challenges to both of  them on a deep sea excursion captured in this episode.

Episode 2 – Northern Ireland

In the second episode Chris and John are back to reality with a bump when we visit Northern Ireland. There is a bit of rain about, in fact there’s a lot of rain about but in between the showers they fish one of the most beautiful estates in the British Isles, Baronscourt Estate. This glorious environment bathes in dreamy late summer sunshine as they seek Pike and Salmon. This picturesque setting provides a natural network of streams and loughs throughout the centuries old estate, all full of Pike and Trout. Lord Hamilton takes time out to talk to them about the problems and joys of running such a massive sporting resource and the Ghillies are full of typical Irish blarney. In many ways this was one of their most challenging assignments.

Episode 3 - Yukon

In episode three Chris and John visit Kluane Lodge in the Yukon, in the extreme north of Canada. Wellesley Lake is in Chris’ words “the most prolific fishery in the world … it’s simply teems with fish”. The setting is high summer; there is 24 hours of daylight and they fish more or less non-stop in a stunning setting with snow still on the mountains all around them on this Alaskan border. The wildlife is staggering, there are Bald Eagles in the skies above us and on the shoreline there’s a Moose. There are Pike everywhere, some well over 20lbs, feeding on huge shoals of Whitefish and small Trout. Whitefish grow to double figures here and take a fly, while there is even a chance of catching the virtually extinct Burbot. But the Pike here aren’t even the main predator. The Lake Char are huge. Fish over 50lbs are caught each year and they feed on anything that’s foolish enough to try to swim past them, but can Chris and John hook one of these monsters and land it?

Episode 4 – Chew Valley Lake

In the final episode Chris and John are at Chew Valley Lake. A famous old Trout fishery in the west of England but currently also the best Pike fishery in the British Isles. Careful management by Bristol Water means that both Trout and Pike fishermen share the water amicably. They are joined by Mike Daunt, a professional casting instructor. Chris and Mike have both been catching pike all their lives, but neither have ever caught them on a fly, so John guides them through this method and their results (at this first attempt) amaze them both!

Angry Bird Rapala's - Now Available from GAC!

Rapala Angry Bird Collection - Pre Order Yours Now!
Glasgow Angling Centre is excited to announce one of the coolest Limited Editon runs top lure manufacture Rapala has ever produced - the Angry Birds series! These highly collectable lures are sure to be a smash hit with young and old anglers alike and for this reason we are allowing our customers to pre-order them from today, ahead of the launch and before anywhere else in the UK! Here is a rundown of the range...
The Rattlin' Red Bird Rapala!
Rattlin' Red Bird
Red is for anger! Loud, rattling anger that can be heard a long distance away. Make the fish see red and bite your Rattlin’ Red Bird! Sound frequencies that are harmonic, uniform and “in tune” with nature combined with the legendary Rapala “wobble” is what make this lure so effective. Rip it fast or run it slow.

How To Fish - Sound and vibrations become especially important in murky water and low light conditions when visibility is poor, and that’s where the Rattlin’ Red Bird really shines – at least figuratively speaking. The Rattlin’ Red Bird is a very straight running lure and easy to fish around cover. Change the speed of the retrieve to explore different depths. To fish openings in vegetation, cast the lure to the far side, let it drop into the hole and retrieve back. If you hit weeds, just rip hard to free the lure. If the lure contacts rocks or hard structure, simply jerk it free. In deeper water let the lure sink into the desired depth and use a rip and jig retrieve or simply fish the Rattlin’ Red Bird as a vertical jigging lure. Click here to Pre-Order now!

The Skitter Pop Bad Pig Rapala!
Skitter Pop Bad Pig
Pig-poppin’ action! The loud surface popping action makes the fish want to smash the Skitter Pop Bad Pig. With its unique loud popping, cupped plastic lip and its balsa wood body, the Skitter Pop Bad Pig can be fished in a variety of methods when fish are surface feeding.

How to fish - When fish are aggressive or busting bait, use the “skitter” technique. This is a retrieve with a steady cadence (either slow or fast) while pumping the rod tip, creating a stop and start spitting commotion imitating a fleeing or wounded baitfish. Another technique is popping the lure. This is done by giving the lure a sharp jerk and letting the lure rest while reeling in the slack. The lure will spit water quite a distance using this approach. A third technique is twitching. Cast the Skitter Pop Bad Pig out, letting the water calm and then twitch the lure on the surface. This will imitate a wounded baitfish or frog struggling. If you let the line go slack between twitches the lure will offer a side to side action as well. Keep the rod tip down for subtle presentation. For more commotion and an aggressive presentation, keep the rod tip up on the first half or the retrieve, then down for the last half to keep the lure from popping out of the water. Click here to Pre-Order now!
The Rattlin' Yellow Bird Rapala!
Rattlin' Yellow Bird
Yellow is never slow! With its cone-shaped head the Rattlin’ Yellow Bird swims fast through the water and finds fish. Sound frequencies that are harmonic, uniform and “in tune” with nature combined with the legendary Rapala “wobble” is what make this lure so effective. Rip it fast or run it slow.

How to fish - Sound and vibrations become especially important in murky water and low light conditions when visibility is poor, and that’s where the Rattlin’ Yellow Bird really shines – at least figuratively speaking. The DT Pink Bird Rapala!
DT Pink Bird
Cute and bubbly! The DT Pink Bird does not look threatening, yet it will capture the fish and give them no chance. Perfectly consistent wood combined with carefully placed internal weights, a tapered fuselage and a thin tail creates the ultimate crankbait action with least possible resistance on the retrieve for less fatigue during extended use. All DT lures have an internal rattle.

How to fish - The DT's philosophy is to create a lure targeting fish at specific depths. The design characteristics of each lure feature the best action to match the mood of fish at those predetermined depths. When making your first cast with the DT Pink Bird at the point of entry initiate the retrieve with a slow steady wind to dig the DT Pink Bird down to its maximum depth faster. Once the DT Pink Bird reaches its predetermined depth of approximately 1.2 meters you may vary your speed or use a stop and go method to discover the best action that triggers fish to strike. Click here to Pre-Order now!
The Mini Fat Rap Blye Bird Rapala!
Mini Fat Rap Blue Bird
Triple threat! Small in size, but not to be underestimated, the Mini Fat Rap Blue Bird will get them! For taking finicky fish, the tight swimming action is just right. The sinking Mini Fat Rap Blue Bird works with unmatchable action for attracting trout and other smaller predators.

How to fish - Mini Fat Rap Blue Bird is a super casting lure for its size. It is especially effective for trout, perch and other small predators. When casting, you can start prospecting the area near you first with short casts. Keep on extending your casts so that in the end you will have the entire hot spot covered without spooking fish that may be at your feet. Use the Count Down method; pay special attention to the moments when you stop the lure as often the fish will strike when you start winding your Mini Fat Rap Blue Bird in. Keep changing the pace of your reeling as Mini Fat Rap Blue Bird catch fish at any speed. Click here to Pre-Order now!

The DT Fat Bomb Bird Rapala!
DT Fat Bomb Bird
It's the bomb! The DT Fat Bomb Bird swims close to the surface with an aggressive wobble. Fish it slow to create a big wake and draw explosive bites.

How to fish - DT Fat Bomb Bird is specially designed for depths less than 30 cm. It’s your carefully tuned weapon of choice for shallow water predators that can’t resist the enticing wobble of DT Fat Bomb Bird. Keep your rod tip up, retrieve slowly and keep your eyes peeled! Watch the progressing wake that the lure creates and be ready for aggressive strikes. Click here to Pre-Order now!
The DT Green Bird Rapala!
DT Green Bird
Boomerang is making a comeback! First the DT Green Bird dives deep to get the fish, then swims back up with the catch. Perfectly consistent wood combined with carefully placed internal weights, a tapered fuselage and a thin tail creates the ultimate crank bait action with least possible resistance on the retrieve for less fatigue during extended use. All DT lures have an internal rattle.

How to fish - The DT's philosophy is to create a lure targeting fish at specific depths. When making your first cast with the DT Green Bird at the point of entry initiate the retrieve with a slow steady wind to dig the DT Green Bird down to its maximum depth faster. Still Time to Support Yorkhill Children's Hospital

Supporting Yorkhill
Back in August, we mentioned that some members of Staff at Glasgow Angling Centre will be taking part in either the 10k or Half Marathon as part of this year's Great Scottish Run in Glasgow.  All the runners have been clocking up the miles over the past few months in preparation for the challenge and now the wait is finally over.  The lads will be on the start line this Sunday - probably full of adrenaline -  with one thing in mind, to do their best for Yorkhill Children's Foundation.
All the Brave runners
There is still plenty of time to support the staff by making a donation by visiting the Just Giving Page.  Your donation will make a big difference: from simple play activities to innovative medical equipment and ground breaking paediatric research, every penny will help to save or improve the life of a child.

This year's  event will be televised live on BBC2 this Sunday and will also be available on iPlayer, so keep an eye out for the lads.  All the staff at Glasgow Angling Centre would like to wish the lads best of luck for Sunday and express our thanks for all the kind donations received so far.
