The Scottish Midge!

Summer time at GAC is when we hold our regular staff match fishing nights at Magiscroft Coarse Fishery, a chance for staff to socialise and try something different, with this type of fishing being a bit outside of many of our teams normal comfort zone as far as angling goes. Some of these nights are held in memory of former staff members who have passed on others are just for fun and all involve Scotch pies, cakes, prizes and banter but by the time the weigh-in comes around there is always talk about one thing - MIDGES!
GAC shop matches are generally a laid back affair!
There are only 5 of the 37 species of Midge found in Scotland that bite us. Almost 90% of all midge bites on humans in Scotland are carried out by the Highland Midge (Culicoides Impunctatus). There are many ways to avoid being bitten by Midges but by far the best repellent we have found is Ultrathon by 3M.
3M Ultrathon is the best midge repellent we have ever used!
Originally developed for the military to provide long lasting protection in tropical environments, Ultrathon features Time Release Technology which enables DEET, which repels midges and other biting insects better than anything else, to be released over a longer period of time. This means you spend less time re-applying repellent and more time fishing, shooting or just enjoying being outdoors! Once applied as per directions on the bottle just give it 10 or 15 minutes to start working and the Midges will leave you alone and you have the choice between a spray or a lotion.
When Highland Midges attack - a feeding frenzy!
DEET has used in insect repellents for more than 50 years and has been studied more extensively than any other repellent ingredient. It is the most widely used active ingredient in insect repellents worldwide and is unequalled when it comes to keeping Midges, Mosquitoes, Ticks, and other bugs away. It is no more dangerous than any other chemical we come into contact with daily provided you read the directions for us. However you should be careful not to get any DEET products on your gear as it can melt or damage some plastics!

There are of course many other methods of protection yourself from the biting Midge such as Midge head nets, Midge hats, repellent wristbands, sonic repellers and even gas powered Midge repellents like the Thermocell units all of which together with DEET repellents are much more effective and consistent than some of the more, shall we say, "homeopathic" repellents and beauty products we hear being recommended to customers every year!

You can buy 3M Ultrathon and many more Midge repellants at Glasgow Angling Centre both instore and online HERE!
