Trout and Salmon Magazine - 15ft Salmon Rod Review

This month in Trout and Salmon magazine they have one of their big Salmon fly rod reviews, which always a source of much debate among Salmon fishers all over the world! This months issue looks at rods around 15ft in length, with the focus new models for 2013! Top casting instructors Jim Curry and Clive Mitchelhill tested them with a variety of lines over two days and the test sample included the following rods:
The Hardy Artisan - Jim Curry described this rod as a powerhouse! He reckoned that he created his best loops and longest casts with this rod. Both Jim and Clive felt the rod needed a little more weight to get the best out of it in their review.

The G.Loomis NRX - Both reviewers thought that this rod felt very light in the hand for a 15 footer and with the right line set up you could fish with it all day and found the action to be deceptively fast!

The LTS Across - Jim Curry liked this rod but felt it was more suited to shooting heads than full Spey lines. Clive put it in his top six rods for the whole test! A well finished rod that will deservedly find a following.

The Sage ONE - Jim found this rod to be versatile with stunning cosmetics and a nice handle, with an action a little less tippy than most Sage rods. Clive also loved the finish and the slightly more traditional feel of the rod.

The Daiwa NewEra SLR - Jim made some beautiful long casts with this rod, creating fabulous line speed and finding it has very fast tip recovery. Clive also liked the slim comfortable handle.

Trout and Salmon Recommended
The Guideline LXi - Both Jim and Clive liked this rod a lot! Already looking to be a best seller the replacement for the LeCie was praised for its ease of use, handle shape and weight ratings on the blank. you can also see our own review of this rod HERE.

The MacKenzie Perflex - Jim found that although this rod prefers shooting head lines, it could cast Spey lines just as well. Clive thought the Mackenzie shooting heads were a perfect match for the rod and felt it was a nice piece of kit.

The Scierra HMX - Jim said that this was a fast, tip action rod for casting shooting heads and liked the reel seat and cosmetics. He found it to be very stiff in the middle and butt sections.

Trout and Salmon Recommended
The Vision Atom - Both Jim and Clive found the Atom to be a user friendly rod and great value for money. They liked the overall finish and felt that this would be an ideal rod for anglers wishing to improve their Speycasting.

Trout and Salmon Recommended
The Shakespeare Oracle Scandi - Jim thought this entry level shooting head rod worked superbly, perhaps better than some more expensive rods. Clive found it to be a good shooting head rod at a very attractive price. These rods will be available to buy at GAC in June 2013 but will no doubt sell out very quickly so we have put them on our website so you can pre-order yours now!

You can read the full review in this months Trout and Salmon, pick up one instore or subscribe HERE and every rod here is available to see in person and purchase from Glasgow Angling Centre both instore and online.

Loop Tube Doubles have a Successor!

When Loop first introduced their Tube Double to the Salmon fishing scene they were one of the first brands to encourage a move away from the use of more traditional treble hooks for Salmon fly fishing and arrived at a time when catch and release fishing was a lot less common than it is today.
Loop hooks and tubes changed the face of Salmon fishing
These stocky little hooks were perfectly matched to the short bottle style tubes that had become so popular from Loop and Shumakov, were better for the fish and tended to snag less leaves when fishing at the back end, especially when used with soft, hairwinged flies like the Tempeldog which were about to explode in popularity! The Loop hooks quickly became a bestseller and although great tube doubles from brands like Partridge and Owner might have been better, they never became as popular and the Loop hook remained at the top until the decision to discontinue them in 2012 ended their reign.
The new Mustad 30851-BLN Tube Double fitted with Swing-Tube!
This gap in the market has now been filled by the new Mustad 308531-BLN Tube Double! Mustad know a bit about making fishing hooks. They were the manufacturer behind the successful Loop Tube Double so re-releasing it as their own makes perfect sense!
The new hook looks great - just like the Loop Double did!
As you can see from these images the new hook looks just like its predecessor, it has the same black nickel finish, short shank and chemically sharpened points and most importantly it is just as strong as the Loop hook, if not stronger due to the 3 step computerized hardening process used by Mustad to ensure maximum strength.
Super sharp and very strong!
There is no denying that these are good looking hooks, especially when used along with the Swing-Tube sleeves from Propellerfly as you can see from the images. These handy little bits of plastic fit over the hook once you have tied it to your leader and make it line up perfectly without the need for extra tubing - especially handy on bottle tubes where it can be impossible to fit silicon tubing on the back! They even come in various sizes and colours so you can change the look of your fly!
The new hook is available now from GAC!
Packaged in 10's and available in sizes 4 to 12 the Mustad 80531BLN is also prices significantly cheaper than the equivalent Loop hook which reached an exorbitant price towards the end of its time at the top. You can buy them from Glasgow Angling Centre both online and instore, find out more buy following this LINK!

Limited Edition Hardy Bouglé Reel!

An exciting new Limited Edition Hardy fly reel!
We are pleased to announce another release of ever popular Hardy Limited Edition fly reels! This special edition of the Hardy Bouglé will be hand built in Alnwick, England and will consist of a limited run of 110 numbered 3¼" reels to commemorate the 110 years since production of the first Bouglé fly reel. These reels will be available from May 2013 - please contact us here at Glasgow Angling Centre either online or instore to pre-order a reel and reserve your piece of angling history, but be quick as with just 110 reels being released worldwide these will sell out very quickly if the recent Queens Jubilee Perfect and Commemorative JLH reels were anything to go by!
Only 110 of these reels will be made!
The story of Louis Bouglé and the fly reel that bears his name is an interesting one. In the early 1900s, Hardy was approached by an extraordinarily flamboyant Frenchman, who was at that time almost unknown in England, whose name would become familiar to two generations of Hardy customers and would echo on even to the present day. His name was Louis Bouglé, and although he was a well known face on the popular French tournament casting circuit, he only would only become famous in Britain after 1903, when William, John James, and Forster Hardy took him at his word and modified their Hardy Perfect reel to the Frenchman's exacting specifications.
Unmistakable Hardy Perfect heritage!
Monsieur Bouglé may have been eccentric, but he was an exceptionally skilled angler and his reputation was enough for the Hardy Bros to take a standard Perfect frame and patiently file it down to produce a lightweight variant. The new fly reel had an eye-catching design, with raised pillars and while it was unmistakably a Perfect, it was a very special one.
Eye catching and lightweight!
The very first Hardy Bouglé was a 3" reel listed in their 1903 catalogue, by which a note by William Hardy indicates that a 3¼" version was in the pipeline - the two sizes were listed right up to the outbreak of war in 1939.
The 1912 pattern check
The model presented here is the first ever 3¼" Bouglé to feature the prized 1912 check. The 1912 pattern check is thought by many to be the most attractive of all the many different styles of check fitted to the Perfect reel (and as seen on the recent Jubilee Perfect), although the reason for its introduction was probably more because owners had experienced trouble with the early check mechanisms jamming in use. The new check introduced a 'floating' pawl, connected via a spring to a brass lever. As you can see from the images, a twist of the regulator was all that was needed to set the drag using this remarkably elegant mechanism.

Limited Edition 3¼" Bouglé Specifications:
  • Designed, developed and manufactured by Hardy Bros. in Alnwick, England
  • Limited Edition of 110 numbered reels - to celebrate 110 years of Bouglé manufacture
  • Hand-assembled and inspected by Hardy Bros. master reel makers
  • Features the prized Hardy Bros. '1912' check system
  • Ivorine type handle
  • 6061 aluminium bar stock construction
  • Polished 'Pearl Silver' anodised finish
  • 'Rolling' line guard pillar
  • Hardy Bros. block leather horseshoe reel case
  • Supplied with commemorative limited edition collectors 'Bouglé anniversary' medallion

Available as either left or right hand wind, limited number of reels will be available from Glasgow Angling Centre and will be sold on a first come first served basis, please contact us HERE to register your interest. Price should be around the £1500 mark.

Working with the latest materials available, they have recently developed a new series of fly lines which will even impress some of the older generation who actually experienced some of the less desirable floating lines made by Airflo in the 90's. Despite the reputation they may have gained way back then, their lines are now among the best in the world and are favoured by many top line designers and fly fishing brands and the new Super Dri range of floating lines are set to be a world beater - check out our mini review HERE!
Super Dri Xceed New Airflo Super Dri Fly Lines
