Custom Puma Pike Trainers!

Check out these awesome custom training shoes, perfect for a spot of urban predator fishing in the inner cities!
Custom Puma Pike Sneaks!
Based in Bristol, South West England, Rob L has been involved in underground creative culture for almost 20 years. In these circles everyone loves their trainers - and for him it was always Puma Suedes in particular, and over the years he sought out and collected more and more pairs. He takes a very methodical approach to his work, and always has one essential rule in mind - it's got to look like a factory finish. To this end he has developed his own techniques of working with leather paint and ink.

"Initially I produced painted graphic work on white leather shoes, but as I was also collecting so many suede shoes it really intrigued me to find out how to master that material too. Early experiments taught me that a solid-colour factory looking finish is quite hard to achieve on a ready-made suede shoe, so I began to experiment with smaller areas of colour and pattern to fill areas in, and this is how my current pattern work was born."

This pair is made from a bright green Puma Match LE, and was painted for a keen Pike fisherman, based on a Pike skin pattern. The shoe was then finished with a custom gold leaf "PUMA PIKE" foil block on each side.

You can see more of Rob L's work on his website www.rob-l.com

New Scott MacKenzie DTX G2 Spey Rods Review!

The long awaited second generation Spey rods from Scott MacKenzie's DTX label have arrived! The new DTX G2 rods feature updated actions, the latest fittings and cool new cosmetics. Plus two new surprise additions to the range in the form of a 10' #7 single hand rod and an 11' 2'' #7/8 switch rod both aimed at anglers fishing smaller rivers for Salmon and Sea Trout. Having cast and fished with the new rods at various points in their development I thought I would give you a bit of an introduction to the finished articles.
The all new DTX G2 from Scott MacKenzie
The 10' single hander is a versatile rod that will spey and overhead cast both shooting heads and conventional fly lines and I would be more than happy to use the rod for small spate river Salmon, night time Seatrout forays and even loch fishing for burly Rainbows and Browns. I can see this rod being a favourite with small stillwater Trout and competiton anglers too, and with a price tag under £400 it could be serious competitor for some better known top end trout rods!
A neat new Switch rod!
The 11' 2'' Switch rod is a dainty, delicate, mini double hander - but hoop it over and the underlying fish fighting power comes to light and I would be more than confident playing a decent summer fish on this versatile wee rod, with no qualms about landing a big fish quickly for a quick photo and release! Matched with one of the latest switch lines or a correctly balanced shooting head set up this rod is capable of needle sharp loops with deadly accuracy and at distances that would raise a few eyebrows with 'Big Rod' fans.
Smart and stealthy fittings!
The more traditionally sized 12', 13', 14', 15' and 16' DTX G2 rods show a definite progression from the first generation rods, the stealthy matt green finished blanks suiting the rods to a tee and a newly designed black reel seat, elongated to allow the use of long footed classics like Hardy Perfects and Malloch reels without modification, sits nicely in a traditional full length cork spey handle. Although aimed at the full spey line market I would have no hesitation in using a shooting head on these rods and the 14' positively sings with the correct head on it, making these among the most versatile rods on the market. Even a fairly average spey caster like myself can get into these rods within a few casts and start to concentrate on the fishing rather than the casting - an important factor in a market with more than its fair share of 'Performance Rods' which, lets face it, can be more than a handful for the vast majority of Salmon anglers. Teamed up with the matching line from Scott's comprehensive range of Heads and Speylines, the guys at MacKenzie including Andy Toft, Ian Kirk and Ben Dixon have taken the guesswork out of spey casting.
The Updated DTX G2 Spey rod.
These new rods however don't mean the end for the best selling original DTX rods. The ranges will be run side by side for the foreseeable future, and the with a new lower price point the older range of rods should now be within reach of a new batch of salmon fishing fanatics, keen to try one of the most popular rods in its class of the last decade.
All the rods come in a smart tube and sock
Scott MacKenzie and his team will be at the GAC Open Weekend in March, giving anglers a chance try before they buy, or even just to see what all the fuss is about, while at the same time giving qualified advice on casting and line selection for the rods - an opportunity not to be missed!

The new rods are due in stock by early February and will be sold by Glasgow Angling Centre. A try before you buy service will also be available, for more information contact us HERE or ask instore.

Hardy Perfect Diamond Jubilee Reel

In 1912, Hardy Bros. introduced a new and improved variation of their ‘floating pawl' check and regulator system into their already world renowned Perfect reels. This new variation of the floating pawl system became widely known as the 1912 pattern check and was incorporated into almost all Hardy Perfect reels made between 1911 and 1916. It is widely regarded as the finest and most wide ranging check system that Hardy Bros. have ever made and the originals are highly sought after by collectors.
A Limited Edition of 250 reels will be made!
100 years on, Hardy Bros. have decided to incorporate the 1912 system into a limited edition run of 250 reels which commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the 140th anniversary of the Hardy company, and also celebrating 100 years since the introduction of the 1912 pattern check.

Designed, developed and manufactured at Hardy Bros., in Alnwick, England, the reels will be made as a Limited edition of 250 reels worldwide. Each reel will be hand assembled and inspected by Hardy master reel makers. The frame and spool will be made from aluminium bar Stock 6061 and each reel will feature a red agate line guard set in a handmade nickel silver housing with Ivorine type handle and of course the wide ranging, world renowned 1912 click check system. The winding Plate runs on 15 ball bearings for one of the smoothest actions of any fly reel.
Commemorative engraving on the winding plate
Adding to the reel's aesthetics is an anodised ‘Diamond' silver hand polished finish, special commemorative engraving on the winding plate, two hole pattern on the spool plus hand browned screws securing the reel back. A protective hard black leather ‘Made in England' horseshoe reel case is supplied as well as a commemorative limited edition collectors ‘Hardy Bros' medallion.

A Limited Edition of 250 reels, expected to be available in the spring of 2012, will cost around £1500 and will be available in right or left hand wind - this reel is not interchangeable between LHW and RHW.

A limited number of reels will be available from Glasgow Angling Centre and will be sold on a first come first served basis, please click HERE to buy now.

The Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002. The only other British monarch to reach this remarkable landmark was Queen Victoria in 1897. This limited edition reel is just one of the many activities to mark the occasion - find out more about the Jubilee celebrations at http://www.royal.gov.uk/

Tagged Yellowfin Tuna recaptured after almost a decade!

The recent news of the recovery of a tagged Yellowfin Tuna came as a surprise to fisheries biologists.

The tag, sent from the National Research Institute of Far Seas Fisheries in Shizuoka, Japan, was just received by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) Marine Resources Division.

The tagged fish measured around 68 inches in length, weighed approximately 189lbs, and was captured on May 26, 2010 off the west coast of Africa off Mauritania.

The fish was originally tagged by a volunteer angler participating in the Marine Division's game fish tagging program on April 20, 2001, just south of Cat Island in the Bahamas. At the time of tagging, the juvenile Tuna weighed just short of 15lbs.

This is the first time a tagged Yellowfin Tuna has been recaptured in the history of the program, which began in 1974.

"What makes this recovery exciting," said Robert Wiggers, a DNR fisheries biologist who administers the tagging program, "is that 151 Yellowfin have been tagged and released by volunteers, but none have been recovered until now.

This fish was at large for nine years, packed on about 174 pounds and was recaptured close to 4,000 miles from where it was initially tagged."

Evidently from this tag recovery, Atlantic Yellowfin Tuna are a highly migratory species and thus are a target species for both domestic and international fisheries. This fact should be of interest to recreational anglers when considering the impacts on the overall population of such fisheries.

Davy's Big Pike!

Davy with his new PB Pike!
One of the biggest pike to be caught in Scotland this season has been landed at the weight of 36lb 3oz by GAC staff member, Davy McGuire. Landed in the first few days of 2012, the big fish was caught from a trout fishery and the fish, caught by David on just his second ever visit to the venue, fell for a legered popped up bluey deadbait after he missed out on the swim he originally wanted to fish! Davy said...

“When I got to the Loch I had already chosen my swim in my head, but it had already been taken, luckily me and my fishing partner made the choice to fish the far side of the Loch after that, a decision that ended up with me catching the fish of the lifetime.”

After a frustrating start to the session saw Davy suffer from a number of dropped runs on his baits, when the big fish came along there was no such problem.

“My indicator dropped back slightly before moving slowly upwards as the fish swam off with the bait, I held the braid mainline to feel the fish and then struck into what felt like a sizeable pike! the fish made several very strong runs and when I saw her in the water I thought she would be around 20lb. I had a bit of trouble with her closer in because I was fishing close to a wooden jetty which see kept going for. Luckily my colleague Paul Doyle had his waders on and managed to net her out in the water, and once on the unhooking mat the trebles just dropped out meaning I could have lost her if I’d played her to the bank.”

On the scales the fish went past the 36lb mark, smashing to pieces Davy’s previous personal best pike of 18lb 9oz.

“It was such an amazing fish to catch and I’m still over the moon. The first time I fished Loch Fad I was lucky enough to net a 33lb pike for Paul, and I never thought the next visit he’d be doing the same for me with an even bigger fish!”

David beat his prize fish using a Greys Prowla 3.5lb TC bait rod with 44lb Power Pro braided mainline to a 30lb Fox Carboflex trace and size 4 semi barbless trebles.
