GAC gives £35k of tackle to angling charity!

Paul Devlin (GAC), Jonathan Duncan (GHOF), Lesley Arkison (GHOF) and John Henderson (Hardy&Greys)
Glasgow Angling Centre and Hardy & Greys have teamed up to support a major fishing charity by providing them with £35,000 worth of new fishing equipment. Get Hooked On Fishing (GHOF) – which helps people find a better way in life through the sport – has been presented with a total of 500 rods, 500 reels and 1,000 spools of line, thanks to backing from Hardy & Greys, GAC and Chapman’s Angling. GAC’s managing director, Paul Devlin, explained: “these outfits will be sent all over the UK to the GHOF sites that help young people get into fishing. “I think it is a BIG deal and it’s something more suppliers and retailers should get involved in. We are always saying that we need to get youngsters into the sport – well, what are we all going to do about it?”

Ken Brewster, sales director at Hardy & Greys, said: “We have enthusiastically supported GHOF for a number of years and we do so simply because it is a great charity. It is tremendously successful at introducing young people to angling, something that everyone in our industry should be passionate about. “GHOF caters for underprivileged youngsters in particular. These are young people who, through certain circumstance, might not otherwise get the opportunity to try fishing.”

A GHOF spokesman added: “It is a registered charity and has been in existence for approximately eight years. We work with all ages and abilities but our focus tends to be on working with children and young people. “We seek to engage with local communities, particularly those who have high levels of economic or social deprivation, and seek to involve them in determining the particular nature of the activities undertaken.

If you would like to volunteer for GHOF or would like to know more about the work they do with young people then please visit http://www.ghof.org.uk/ for more information. GHOF will also be running taster sessions for kids at the Glasgow Angling Centre Open Weekend Event on the nearby canal basin on the 29th and 30th of September 2012!

Knut Syrstad - An Appeal

The world knows about the legendary pioneering spirit of the Viking, and two identical brothers Knut and Trond Syrstad embody these characteristics. They have a unique and powerful bond between them that has seen them achieve so many great things during their lives. They ironically have both battled Testicular Cancer; Trond was perhaps fortunate that his treatment has been successful and he is in remission. Alas for Knut, the hoped for cure has not materialised for him yet, and he has battled with his indomitable spirit through a number of deadly encounters with the spread of metastases through his body. He has endured numerous hazardous surgeries and countless treatments of body wrecking chemotherapy. What he has been through would have finished any normal mortal man; but not Knut as he truly is no ordinary man. He embodies the true Viking spirit and is not ready for Valhalla as he battles stoically with humour, dignity and compassion for his wife, children, family and dear friends.
Knut and Trond Syrstad
Knut has the opportunity to try new pioneering medicine and needs further surgery to provide a lung transplant. This will give him the chance to live significantly longer and fulfil his dreams to see his children grow up and his LTS tackle company receive the recognition it rightly deserves. For many people to have a dream to pursue, this is enough to provide a direction in life. Knut has that dream, but needs to remove the deadly shackles of cancer that have hung remorselessly to him for the last dozen years. Having watched my dear wife die from cancer after a long protracted battle where I nursed her for two years, I have complete admiration for the Syrstad family and their fight to give Knut every opportunity to pursue his dreams. I would humbly ask that if you can make a donation of support, you are helping in no small way a giant of a man, who in this time of need, deserves and is truly worthy of our support. The human race needs true champions and iconic figures. Knut Syrstad is respected and loved the world over as an embodiment of all that is good in humanity. Online donations to support Trond and Knut can be made through PayPal through Thomas Thore's website - http://www.hardcoreflyfishing.se/se/knut-syrstad-relief-fund-11212453

Not only does it stock the single-largest range of tackle and clothing in Europe, but there is ample space in which customers can try before they buy. The store is just two minutes drive from Glasgow's M8 motorway and is easily found. It also has its own large car park. Inside you can hold and compare tackle under one high ceiling. There are more than 1,500 rods on display, and you are welcome to get them off the racks and try them out on the 30m casting pool or the neighbouring canal basin. The same goes for the hundreds of reels and fly-lines. There is also the UK's largest selection of flies, from the best manufacturers. Take your time to fill a fly-box for your next trip! And do ask for advice to find out which patterns are fishing best. If you are an armchair angler you can pick up the latest books, DVDs and catalogues. Plus a massive range of hunting and shooting equipment is available from Glasgow Field Sports – who have their store and gun room inside the Glasgow Angling Centre!

Glasgow Angling Centre operates a bustling behind the scenes mail-order department, sending out hundreds of parcels every day to customers all over the world, and giving valuable advice to anglers who aren’t within striking distance of the store. This busy service is backed up by 2 huge warehouses, which are both stuffed to the rafters with stock to keep both shop and mail-order customers constantly supplied.
Get FREE casting demos and lessons!

2013 Scottish Fly Fishing Instructors Course

Have you got what it takes to be a Scottish fly fishing instructor?

The SGAIC organisers are now taking applications for the next round of assessments in both single and double handed disciplines. Their next course starts the 21st of October 2012!
Want to become an instructor?
SGAIC is the home of Scottish Game Angling Instruction and the aim of the Scottish Game Angling Certificate is to improve the quality and number of instructors available to game anglers in Scotland.

There are many benefits of being a SGAIC trained instructor, including...

  • SGAIC is the only instructor qualification where candidates receive training/coaching, and development plans aimed at getting them to pass. Other qualifications just require that you pay the fee and turn up on assessment day.
  • Quality instruction and assessment. All lead instructors are all qualified to AAPGAI advanced level, and most also hold level 2 Sports Coach qualifications. They always use independent assessors to ensure fair and consistent assessments; these assessors are AAPGAI Masters (the highest qualification in the UK).
  • An active community of instructors across Scotland. Meet great people with like minds. Share ideas and experiences.
  • Continuous Personal Development. SGAIC hold a minimum of one CPD day a year aimed at ensuring SGAIC instructors continue to develop their skills and learn new things
  • An opportunity to progress. Holders of the SGAIC qualification automatically have equivalence with AAPGAI's provisional level. This means, should you wish to progress you can go straight to taking the AAPGAI advanced assessments.
  • Once you complete the course you can get an instructors license from SANA. This makes it easier to work with schools/local authorities (should you wish) and means you are insured as an instructor

Learn from the best!
To join the course you need to be a reasonably competent caster to begin with, and of course an experienced fly fisherman. An inexperienced angler and poor caster will struggle to make the improvements necessary to reach instructor standard in the time required. You can sit either one or both the Single Hand (Trout) or the Double Hand (Salmon) assessment but it is usually recommended that you do them one at a time! More info on the course content can be found HERE!

To find out more, or apply for a place on the next course, check out the SGAIC website for more details!

Available in 3 sizes and 5 killer colour combos and supplied with a matching Jig Head and treble hook stinger. The 'spitting image' 3D Reel Eel is designed to swim with a big, lively curl tail kicking action - both on steady retrieve and on the drop – where they produce the perfect escape pattern, tricking even the most wary predatory fish to attack. Field testing results have been phenomenal and these easily fished lures will amaze you! Perfect for Pike, Zander and other big predatory fish – even in saltwater for Ling, Pollack and Bass! Superb for casting and trolling over shallow areas with it's ultra slow speed action.
