February FOTM Winners!

The winner of the February Fish of the Month Competition is Matt Ahern with this picture of his Salmon caught from the Drowes. As usual, the judging of the competition was left to our thousands of Facebook fans, who vote on their favourite pictures by hitting the Like button, and although it was a close finish, Matt was the clear winner with 416 Likes on our Facebook Gallery!

Every month our FOTM competition gets bigger and better with amazing pictures of  many different fish species from around the world being sent in by our customers and we now get so many great entries we have decided to give a GAC Cap to the entrants that came in 2nd and 3rd place as well, so here are the runners up, Darren Reilly and Paul Lee!

March Open Weekend - Hardy Greys Casting Competition!

Glasgow Angling Centre will once again be hosting the popular distance fly casting competition at our March Open Weekend on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of March 2012 - sponsored by Hardy & Greys!

Simply fill out a form with a Hardy representative to enter and you will have two minutes to make as many casts as possible with the new Greys XF2 Competitor Special 10ft #7 and a Platinum XD line, with the longest verified cast being submitted for the competition. The customer with the longest cast on each day will win £100 worth of Hardy Greys products of their choice!

There will be two casting sessions per day and this year we will have a special junior section for under 14's with a lighter outfit and great prizes as well!

See the Latest Gear from Loop at the GAC March Event!

Swedish fly fishing tackle company, Loop, will be in attendance at the Glasgow Angling Centre March Open Weekend on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of March 2012! In store all weekend will be Loop Team member and AAPGAI qualified instructor, David Moore. David is located in the north west of the UK and he has fished extensively throughout Norway for more than a decade for salmon on various named rivers. Salmon fishing is his passion and he will travel anywhere for a chance at one. David has been fishing from the age of eight, and a member of the loop design team designed the Loop balanced reel seat, as seen on the Loop Opti Power Spey rods. Fish of the Month February Entry - Drowes Salmon!

Matt Ahern caught this fish on the Drowes in Ireland on a Rapala Firetiger at the Wash Stones beat. The Salmon weighed 10lbs, was covered in sea-lice and is his first of the season.

The fly tying demonstrations are always very popular at our Open Weekends and the next one on March 2nd, 3rd and 4th will be no different! These guys are all at the top of their game and will go out of their way to show you how to perform the latest techniques and how to tie any style of fly you can think of. Classed as one of the very best tyers in Europe and a GAC favourite, Davie McPhail has been tying flies since 1982 and has more recently become a YouTube sensation with millions of hits. Stevie Munn

Stevies fly patterns have appeared in many angling books and he also writes articles in many angling magazines including Irish Angler, Total Flyfisher, Trout & Salmon, Flyfishing & Fly Tying and Chasing Silver of which he is the Field Editor in Ireland. He has fished many venues throughout the world but is most at home fishing on one of the large Irish loughs or rivers, for wild Brown Trout, Dollaghan or Salmon. Duncan specialises in tying innovative, modern salmon flies and is the inventor of the hugely successful Flamethrower series of flies. He ties flies professionally for many salmon beats and high profile salmon anglers all over the world and often has a lengthy waiting list. Michael Low is well known in the competition scene, having had success from an early age and is also a fan of river fishing. David  has always been fascinated by Pike fishing, but it doesn't stop him from fishing for other species.
