Hardy Zenith Sintrix Vs Sage ONE Rod!

The Yellowstone Angler team, who published the results of their big #5 weight rod shootout earlier in the year, have pitched the Hardy Zenith against the Sage One in a new head to head test. Bottom Line: The Hardy Zenith, 2011 5-weight shootout winner, is still the champ - and the new Sage ONE is better than the Z-Axis it replaces!

Here's what Yellowstone's George Anderson had to say:

"In our latest 5 weight shootout for 9 foot 4-pc. Rods, the Hardy Zenith walked away with top honours in every single performance category and won handily over the second place Sage Z-Axis.

Hardy Zenith with SINTRIX Technology
At the time we were doing our #5 weight shootout, we had heard about the new Sage One, and we desperately wanted to get it into our shootout, but it was just impossible to get a production sample at that time. We knew that any rod that was going to replace the terrific Z-Axis line must be good, but how good? About two weeks ago we got our hands on a new Sage One in the 9 foot #5 model, that was headed to Labrador and big brook trout, but we were able to keep it for a couple of days.
The new Sage ONE Series fly rod
We were anxious to cast the rod, but more importantly to be able to have enough time to do a little mini-shootout and make a direct comparison with both the Hardy Zenith and the older Sage Z-Axis the One will replace. After an hour of casting all three rods head to head out on the lawn, we had some answers..."

Kevin Hamilton has dedicated a lot of time and effort to hunting Bass around Scotland with plugs and lures and his hard work finally paid off! Using a shallow diving lure on a Greys Prowla rod and Shimano reel he hooked the fish on an ebbing tide and after an epic struggle with many runs and even avoiding a hungry Seal he managed to land the fish and weigh it at 12lb 10oz. How clean a Flyline

Here is a short video tutorial from Rio Fly Lines on how to properly clean and care for your line. Fly lines can be expensive pieces of kit and we often get asked how to look after them and even get moans and groans about the lifespan of lines when it turns out they have never been cleaned even once in a seasons worth or more use! A few minutes taking care of a line will increase its performance and mean it will last much longer too!

Always use fly line specific products on your lines, like Rio Agent-X, Airflo Whizz Lube or 3M Line Dressing, as other household or automotive cleaning products can damage the fly lines coating. The Rio Wondercloth and Rio Agent-X are both available from Glasgow Angling Centre.

Fish of the Month August Entry - Butterstone Record!

Ian Glassford was fishing Butterstone Loch when he caught this 22lb Rainbow Trout - a new record for the venue! He was fishing a Sixth Sense DI3 line and an Orange Booby when he hooked the fish, and his quick thinking boat partner had to lift anchor and follow the fish as it quickly emptied his reel down to the backing. It was caught just two days before his 60th birthday too so was a well timed treat as well. You can vote for this picture to win on Facebook by clicking here and hitting the Like button!

GAC in The Herald

Alan Taylor writes in the Glasgow Herald about his first foray into fly fishing and a visit to the Glasgow Angling Centre...

'My quest for waders takes me to the Glasgow Angling Centre, which describes itself as a “fishing megastore”. Early one dank morning it is jumping with men of a certain age wandering up and down the aisles in search of the wherewithal to fox fish. There are rods and reels, hooks and flies in their thousands, each designed for a specific purpose and particular conditions. Clearly, fishing is more complex than I had thought...'

Fish of the Month August Entry - Galloway Huss!

Alan Dorricott caught this Bull Huss weighing in at a shade over 15lbs. It was caught on a Mackerel flapper rig which was intended for Tope, off the Mull of Galloway with On Yer Marks skippered by Matthew Burrett, around 5 miles out, with the tide running hard. Due to the tide and the 2lb leads they were using, this fish took 15 minutes to get on the boat. The fish was quickly measured, tagged, photographed then returned safely to the water. You can vote for this picture to win on Facebook by clicking here and hitting the Like button!

FF&FT Hardy Zenith Sintrix Rod Review

Magnus Angus from Flyfishing and Fly Tying magazine reviews the Hardy Zenith 9'6'' #7 fly rod...

'Having been teased with prototypes for a good few months, this is the first production Zenith I’ve used. Constructed using Hardy’s much advertised Sintrix material, Zenith is the first freshwater range to exploit the new resin system. It's one of those rods that feels firm and taut from the moment it’s assembled. As you thread the line you wonder if it’ll be too stiff. Then you roll the line out and realise it’s taut for a reason; the sense of precision is tangible.

This is a fast, crisp rod, so I was expecting good distance performance and wondering if it would feel dull at short range. From the first roll into a cast the Zenith impressed me and continued to impress as I got to know it.

Nicely shaped full wells grip – this one is well used!
Sintrix is touted as a strong/tough material but it also has the potential to take rods lighter if the designers decide to go that way. In the hand this is light, not shockingly light, but light. It feels to me as if Hardy did not feel compelled to go lighter than it needed. Actually, there are no surprises there. Speaking to Hardy’s rod guru (ie Howard, the product man) he mentioned that Zeniths would match the lightest rods on the market. I took that as implying he felt no reason to take it further at the moment.

As a casting tool, this Zenith is capable of extremely well controlled loops and that’s at medium range. Cast short and there’s enough ‘give’ for me to feel the rod bending. Lengthen the line and the Zenith gives a little more and I feel a little more. Loops are about as exact and precise as I can make them. That’s the thing really, this is designed as a performance rod, which it is, but I don’t feel I am stretching to keep up with it.

The expectation is that the first wave of anglers to adopt (ie buy) Sintrix based rods will be competent casters and committed fly fishers looking for a performance edge from something new. If they have the ability this rod is more than capable of rewarding them.

Reel seat detail
Hardy advertising emphasises the fish-playing strength of Sintrix. I doubt many single-handed Zeniths will be tested even close to their limits. Frankly, I can bully sizeable trout with this rod and come nowhere near breaking it. That strength will inevitably lead anglers to step down a weight, to choose a new outfit to replace one a line weight heavier. Fishing this Zenith I would have no qualms about letting it step into the shoes of an #8, provided I match the leader to the fly a #7 line is perfectly capable of handling a hefty fly – I’m thinking grilse, sea trout and the like. Whilst this rod is a little lighter than my everyday 9ft 6in 7-weight, it is significantly lighter than my 8-weight gear and as far as I can see it can deal with anything that #8 can handle. Now that opens up a whole interesting range of possibilities.

Aimed at competent casters and anglers who want to keep abreast of the latest technology, this Zenith is an impressive start for the Sintrix generation.'

Fish of the Month August Entry - Lower Clyde Trout!

Iain Dewar sent us his pic of a Trout caught from Clyde at Yoker, Glasgow. An unusual catch for this area of the river, it took a small piece of worm on a size 14 hook and was the only fish of the day, although it was later joined by a greedy Crab! Ian is wearing a glove as he is allergic to fish - but he won't let that stop him enjoying his sport! You can vote for this picture to win on Facebook by clicking here and hitting the Like button!
