Hardy Proaxis rods now in stock!

Hardy Proaxis SINTRIX rods have landed! I have been playing with these for a few months now and I can honestly say they are a bit special. Even some dedicated Anti-Hardy guys I fish with have been impressed. And don't be put off buy its Tarpon and Bonefish fishing lineage - the #9 and #10 are awesome rods for Pike and Pollack, and the #8 is perfect for Bass, so these rods have many uses for the stay at home, UK fly fisher!

The Hardy Proaxis saltwater fly rod was designed and developed by Hardy in conjunction with some of the world's best saltwater guides and anglers. Their development team, led by five times Tarpon Gold Cup Grand Champion Andy Mill and Hardy's head of product development, Howard Croston, have pushed Hardy’s new Sintrix technology to the absolute limit - and the end result is staggering in both performance and durability.

These fast-action rods are loaded with cutting edge features, like lightweight saltwater-safe hardware, titanium recoil guides and, of course, Hardy’s revolutionary Sintrix material. Proaxis rods are lighter, stronger, more impact resistant and capable of withstanding much higher loads than standard graphite fly rods. So, with less chance of damage, you can cast further, fish longer and fight harder when pursuing big saltwater species.

GAC are stocking the 9' four section format, which arrived last week, but there is also a one piece version, which is aimed at flats anglers who leave their rods permanently rigged up - if you want one of these let us know and we will work out how to get it to you! The one piece rod also comes in a comedy nine foot long rod tube!

You can purchase the SINTRIX rods on the website and if you want to try one out simply come to the shop where you can use our casting pool to give one a go!

GAC meets the winner of the Hardy Zenith prize draw!

Recently Glasgow Angling Centre hosted one of its mega popular Open Weekends, giving customers a chance to come and meet tons of fishing stars and sample a huge range of new tackle for the 2011 season. Hardy and Greys were offering customers a chance to enter into a free prize draw to win a Hardy Zenith rod worth up to £649 and over the weekend the uptake was superb with hundreds of people entering.

On Sunday the 6th of March Paul Devlin, owner of Glasgow Angling Centre, drew out the lucky winner’s name, which was a Mr Peter Edge from Troon, Ayrshire. Mr Edge chose the best selling 10’ #7 Zenith rod as his prize, and is pictured below receiving the rod from Paul and John Henderson from Hardy and Greys.

From left to right - Paul Devlin, Peter Edge and John Henderson
Mr Edge commented: “I normally come to the GAC Open Weekends to see what is new on the market and the Hardy Zenith Sintrix rod was definitely one of those products I was coming to see, I can’t thank Paul enough for pulling my name out the hat, it has saved me from having to buy one!”

John Henderson from Hardy and Greys added: “it was great to see a local angler win the prize; the uptake on the prize draw was great with record numbers through the door we had to print off extra entry forms as the interest just grew every day. The open weekend has always been an opportunity for customers to come and try before they buy and this year was no exception with Hardy SINTRIX rods, Greys XF2 ranges and other existing products all proving very popular”.

We do hope all you anglers out there will be coming to our next event in September, there will be representatives from all the major tackle companies covering Sea, Predator, Coarse and Game fishing plus loads of demo's and competitions so why not put the date in your diary now, Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 25th of September 2011.

Skate Tagathon 2011

Once again dedicated sea anglers will be taking the long trip up Scotland's West coast to help gather data regarding one of the nations shark stocks on behalf of the Scottish Shark Tagging Programme(SSTP) www.tagsharks.com.

The SSTP already runs two tagging Events focussing on other species in trouble, but this will be the inaugural running of an Event where the focus will be on Common Skate. Around 75 sea anglers using their own boats are expected to fish the Skate Tagathon Event in the waters around Ardfern, Argyll and Bute over the weekend of 8th-10th April.
Help save the Common Skate

Common Skate are one of the largest species of fish in Scottish waters with some growing to well over 200lbs. It was once abundant in north-west Europe but there have been significant declines around the UK over the last century due to excessive commercial exploitation and bycatch.

According to Willie Kennedy of the SSTP " The data already gathered on common skate is beginning to give us some idea of their behaviour of these fish, but it is obvious it is not a simple black and white story – there appears to be a complicated pattern of residency and migration.

"As the recent Marine Atlas produced by the Scottish Government points out ‘As many elasmobranchs tend to school in sex and age related groups, trawls can often pick up large numbers of juvenile fish in a single haul before they have had a chance to reproduce. Therefore relatively few animals actually reach breeding age, and those that do only produce large enough numbers of young later in life to help rebuild a population.‘

"Consequently if we can identify those areas where female skate congregate and reproduce then appropriate measures can be taken to regenerate stocks." argues Kennedy.

Tagging is the only non-destructive assessment of sharks available to help provide data regarding species migration patterns, growth rates, population and stock make-up and stock fluctuations.

The main base for the Skate Tagathon Event will be the Galley Of Lorne Hotel in Ardfern with the main launch site for small boats being Ardfern Marina.

Anyone wishing to find out more about the Skate Tagathon Event, or to register to take part in it, can do so at http://www.tagsharks.com/skate-tagathon-info

Hardy Zenith Review in Trout Fisherman

Tested - The Hardy Zenith!
Trout Fisherman magazine have reviewed the Hardy Zenith SINTRIX rod in their Gear Guide in this month's issue. Top angler and journalist Robbie Winram tried out the 9ft #5 and the 10ft #7, using them with a range of lines weights and densities to get a better idea of what the rod is like in a proper fishing situations. He reckoned that the 9ft #5 as a powerful rod that can lift, cast and deliver a 5wt line at a distance, but it was also "versatile enough for crisp presentation and accuracy at short and medium range, especially with delicate dry flies". The 10ft #7 was deemed to be "a totally different animal with bags of steel and power in it" and that "for overhead and false casting and for double hauling these rods excelled"
